Sony CEO Says Vita Gaming Sales Near Expectations

BERLIN - Sony Chief Executive Kazuo Hirai said on Thursday that its new gaming device Vita was mostly selling in line with its expectations, though in some places it was off the pace.

Vita hit the stores earlier this year, the latest in a line of mobile gaming gadgets in the spirit of Nintendo's Game Boy and Atari's Lynx, but some analysts have questioned whether there is room for such a device in a market increasingly dominated by games played on smartphones and tablets.

After Sony returned a record net loss of 455 billion yen ($5.8 billion) for the last fiscal year to March 31, Hirai promised 10,000 job cuts and big cost reductions in the TV unit, which has clocked up losses of about $12 billion in the past decade.

"Worldwide, the Vita is pretty much along where we would expect it to be, maybe trending behind in certain territories," Hirai told Reuters on the sidelines of IFA, Europe's biggest consumer trade show, held in Berlin.

He declined to disclose where sales were lagging.

When he took the helm at Sony in April, Hirai vowed to revive the fortunes of the company, maker of the Walkman music player and PlayStation games console, after years of competition from foreign rivals had broken its dominance in consumer electronics.

Part of the plan is betting Sony's future on mobile devices such as the Xperia smartphone, gaming and digital imaging, while developing new businesses, including a medical unit.

In Berlin Sony launched three smartphones and one tablet, all powered by Google's Android platform, saying patent challenges facing the software platform had not affected its business.

Sony Mobile chief Kunimasa Suzuki told Reuters he was confident of selling more smartphones in fiscal year 2012-2013 than the 34 million it shifted in the previous year.

After Sony returned a record net loss of 455 billion yen ($5.8 billion) for the last fiscal year to March 31, Hirai promised 10,000 job cuts and big cost reductions in the TV unit, which has clocked up losses of about $12 billion in the past decade.

Hirai said the group was ahead of plan to return the TV business to the black. "This fiscal year we will halve our losses from what we made last year. We are ahead of track."

Sony is also in talks with several companies who could be interested in its chemicals business, Hirai said. The unit makes material used in consumer electronic products and employs several thousand people. He declined to elaborate.

As for other Japanese exporters, the strength of the yen weighs on Sony's results. The currency has become a safe-haven destination for many investors as debt concerns undermine confidence in both the euro and the dollar.

"The currencies are a real pain," Hirai said. We can complain about that, but it is the reality we have to face."

Since Sony's European sales account for a fifth of all revenue, compared with a tenth at both Panasonic Corp and Sharp, it is particularly sensitive to currency swings against the euro.

Afghans: 5 civilians killed by insurgent rockets

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) ? Insurgent rockets killed five Afghan civilians Thursday while they were waiting on the side of a road for a bus in the east of the country, government officials said.

The attack came as the Australian government announced the deaths of five soldiers ? three when an Afghan soldier turned his gun on them inside a base and two from a helicopter crash.

Attacks and firefights have been on the rise in Afghanistan this summer after a calm winter as the Taliban launch strikes against international forces and step up targeted killings of those seen as beholden to the government.

Insurgents appeared to be aiming at a nearby Afghan army base but the rockets missed their target, said the deputy police chief for Logar province, Raeis Khan Rahimzai says another 10 people were wounded by the barrage in Baraki Barak district.

It was the second such incident in as many days, said Logar government spokesman Din Mohammad Darwesh. He said a rocket hit a civilian house on Wednesday and killed one woman inside.

Militants have been responsible for the vast majority of civilian casualties in the Afghan war, with roadside bombs being the biggest killers. A U.N. report last month said 1,145 civilians were killed and 1,954 others were injured in the first half of the year, 80 percent of them by militants.

The Taliban have also been recruiting and encouraging Afghan police and soldiers to attack their international or Afghan colleagues. The Wednesday attack that killed three Australian soldiers in Uruzgan province in the south was the eighth such assault this month ? making 15 international service members killed by their partners in Afghanistan in August.

Australia has 1,550 troops in Afghanistan and makes the largest military contribution of any country outside NATO. Last year, four Australian soldiers were killed by Afghan troops.

At least 53 international service members have been killed in Afghanistan so far this month.

LOVE, CONVENTION-STYLE

It wasn't all politics at the convention. There was time for romance, too.

RNC Production Manager Bradley Thomson, 32, proposed to Laura Bowman, 27, on the convention stage Wednesday morning. Thomson led Bowman onstage, where the screens were filled with pictures of the couple and their dog. Thomson got down on one knee, and Bowman immediately accepted.

She later said that the engagement was a surprise, although she knew something was up. "I thought there was something fishy when he said that there was a sound problem, because there never is," Bowman said.

The couple met in New York and have dated for about two years.

Signs of Skin Cancer: Skin Cancer - Basal Cell Carcinoma (BCC)

In the United States, Basal Cell Carcinoma (BCC) accounts for 90 percent of all skin cancers in the southern states, and 47 percent in the northern states. Basal Cell Carcinoma is the most common form of skin cancer in Australia and New Zealand, representing 70-80% of diagnosed skin cancers. Occurrence of Basal Cell Carcinoma mainly occurs on the head and neck. It occurs less often in Asians and rarely among darker skinned races. As with all skin cancers the risk is considered to be related to sun exposure. The positive about Basal Cell Carcinoma is that it is slow-growing and rarely metastasizes throughout the body. However, it is locally destructive and can invade neighboring bone and nerve tissue.

Description - BCC is a malignant epithelial cell tumor that begins as a papule (a small, circumscribed, solid elevation of the skin) and enlarges peripherally, developing into a crater that erodes, crusts and bleeds. BCC originates in the basal layer of the epidermis, the lowest layer of skin.

Signs and Symptoms of Basal Cell Carcinoma - There are five typical characteristics of basal cell carcinoma that are quite different from each other. Two or more features are frequently present in one tumor. BCC sometimes resembles non-cancerous skin conditions such as psoriasis or eczema and requires diagnosis by a trained person. The five warning signs of basal cell carcinoma are:

  1. An open sore that bleeds, oozes or crusts, and remains open for three or more weeks. A persistent, non-healing sore is a very common early manifestation.
  2. A reddish patch or an irritated area, frequently occurring on the chest, shoulders, arms or legs. Sometimes the patch crusts. It may also itch or hurt. At other times, it persists with no noticeable discomfort.
  3. A smooth growth with an elevated, rolled border and an indentation in the centre. As the growth slowly enlarges, tiny blood vessels may develop on the surface (telangiectases).
  4. A shiny bump (nodule) that is pearly or translucent and is often pink, red or white. The nodule can also be tan, black or brown, especially in dark-haired people, and can be confused with a mole or melanoma.
  5. A scar-like area (white, yellow, or waxy in appearance) which often has poorly defined borders. The skin itself appears shiny or taut. Although a less frequent sign, it can indicate the presence of a more aggressive tumor.

Diagnosis of Basal Cell Carcinoma - Diagnosis is almost always by biopsy. Tissue is cut away from the site and examined under a microscope.

Medical Treatment of Basal Cell Carcinoma - Allopathic treatment depends on the size and type of tumor. There are various types of surgery or non-surgical treatments chosen from.

Non-surgical treatment of BCC - Allopathic non-surgical treatments have low success rates.

  • Topical application of 5-fluorouracil for 2 to 12 weeks is only beneficial for superficial BCC. Fluorouracil is used to prevent excess cell proliferation as found in skin cancer and psoriasis. It prevents the formation of RNA which in turn prevents the formation of DNA.
  • Imiquinoid cream -currently the use of Imiquinoid cream is considered experimental. It is an immune response modifier that stimulates the immune system to release cytokines that destroy cancer cells. Treatment causes significant skin irritation. Not all types of BCC are affected.
  • Ionizing radiation: Superficial x-ray. It results in radiation damage, therefore it is used more with older patients. Impaired immune function and general malaise also usually results. Used for facial BCC and appears less effective for BCC occurring elsewhere.

Surgical Removal of BCC - Surgery is the most studied, and most used treatment for removal of a BCC in allopathic medicine. The effectiveness of surgery depends very much on the skill of the surgeon. Various surgical methods:

  • Electrodessication and Curettage - the BCC is burned and removed with a scalpel. The main disadvantage of this method is that the tumor often tracks down hair follicles. (9)
  • Cryosurgery - liquid nitrogen to freeze burn the BCC.
  • Excision surgery- the BCC is cut from the skin with a scalpel. To increase the likelihood of complete removal of the tumor, a portion of normal-appearing skin surrounding the BCC is removed.
  • Microscopic or MOHS surgery - the BCC is cut from the skin, along with some of the healthy surrounding tissue. This is examined under a microscope to check for any remaining cancer cells. Tissue is then taken in increments of thin layers of skin, until no more cancer cells are detected. Mohs is the most effective allopathic medical treatment (99% cure rate for primary BCC, 90-95% for recurrent BCC).
  • Laser surgery. Lasers are also used as a secondary therapy when topical medications or other techniques are unsuccessful.

Recurrence of BCC - Once a basal cell carcinoma has been removed, another growth can develop in the same place or nearby area. It has been found that 36% of people who develop a basal cell carcinoma will develop a secondary primary BCC within the next 5 years. Radiotherapy can result in more aggressive and invasive cells in a recurrent BCC.

Effective Alternative Treatments - Allopathic medicine is often successful in completely removing BCC's but obviously also often fails, given the high number of recurrences suffered by many people with repeat visits to the doctor and then specialist. These treatments don't always work as well as expected or hoped.

Adverse effects of mining industry provoke hard questions for medical humanitarian organizations

ScienceDaily (Aug. 28, 2012) ? Increasingly humanitarian organizations will find themselves responding to health emergencies provoked by the adverse effects of mining and other extractive industries, setting up a potential clash to do with the core principles and values at the heart of humanitarian medicine, writes Philippe Calain from the humanitarian medical organization, M?decins Sans Fronti?res (MSF), in this week's PLoS Medicine.

"A pragmatic approach of engagement with the corporate sector for the delivery of aid, or an implicit support to mainstream development agendas could compromise the legitimacy of humanitarian medicine," argues Calain. He continues, "A principled understanding of humanitarian medicine entails selfless moral commitments that are incompatible with the for-profit objectives of corporate industries."

Drawing on MSF's experience responding to the "worst lead poisoning epidemic in modern history" resulting from artisanal gold mining in Nigeria's Zamfara state, Calain explores the pitfalls, difficult alliances, and challenges medical humanitarian organizations must navigate in confronting the dire health consequences resulting from extractive industries, whether informal, illegal, or sanctioned.

He argues that, in developing countries, extractive industries (including ore mineral mining and oil extraction) have far reaching consequences on health through environmental pollution, communicable diseases, violence, destitution, and compromised food security. While humanitarian organisations might be called to intervene in areas occupied by the extractive sector, Calain argues that oil and mineral exploitation reveals a fundamental clash of values between humanitarianism, the for-profit sector, and privatised global philanthropy.

Operating in this relatively new terrain for medical humanitarian organizations -- outside the traditional humanitarian response to armed conflict, epidemics, and natural disasters -- requires a deeper examination of which types of compromises and alliances are acceptable. Responding to these kinds of emergencies, warns Calain, cannot be reduced to the development of medical and technical expertise alone.

"While advocacy and expansion of their operational expertise are obvious paths for non-governmental organizations, a more complex and ideologically loaded question to solve is about what type of relationships humanitarian organisations should entertain with the corporate sector," writes Calain. "Specific medical humanitarian organisations can respond to these challenges in different ways, based on their position between pragmatic or principled approaches, and their willingness to develop new technical capacities."

According to Calain, many mainstream medical humanitarian organisations would rather opt for no engagement with the natural resource extraction sector due to questions of values and conflicts of interest.

He concludes: "the Zamfara outbreak has called attention to a novel agenda for medical humanitarian organisations, including technical preparedness for environmental disasters, dialogue with international environmental organisations, and a better understanding of the exact role of resources extraction in perpetuating humanitarian crises."

Denon launches MC2000 DJ controller, invites prospective spinners to 'own the party'

Load and start track A. Load, and start track B on the next down beat. Adjust pitch / speed of track B to keep in time with track A. Now you know the very basics of DJing, you might want some hardware to practice it on. Fortunately, for you beginners, Denon has just released the MC2000 DJ controller. An entry-level device that should get you (and your tracks) up to speed. Along with the plug and play USB device, you'll get a copy of Serato's DJ Intro mixing software (for which it was specifically designed) to get you started. If that's not for you, or perhaps you've already earned your spinning stripes, and are looking for something compact, no problem -- full MIDI output means this can work with other software options too. There's a basic two-channel mixer snug between the pair o'wheels, and all the usual buttons for hot-cues and loops etc. As is fast becoming standard, the audio interface is built-in, making the hook-up at parties and gigs a much simpler -- and less computer-bothering -- affair. If has ticked your boxes, it'll be available from October, commanding an estimated £269 / €325 / $299 out of your record budget when it does so. In the meantime you can cue-up the promo video after the break.

9 Pet Races You Might Want to Host Yourself ? ThanksForNuthin

Forget heading to the track to catch the horses, instead, grab your pets and some fellow pet owners and throw your own races right at home. Need a little inspiration? Here are a few great pet races:

Dachshunds

(Video Link)

This is one of the biggest pet racing sports around, in part because it?s sponsored by a major corporation: Wienerschnitzel. While smaller wiener races take place around the nation throughout the year, the biggest event, by far, is the annual Wienerschnitzel Wiener Nationals in California.

Chihuahuas

(Video Link)

Here?s another pet race with a big company behind it ?the National Chihuahua Races, which are sponsored by PetCo. Unfortunately, it seems the company stopped sponsoring the event after the fifth annual competition, which was back in 2009. Sorry all you Chihuahua owners, I guess you?ll have to just organize and participate in your own city-wide races instead.

Hamsters

(Video Link)

While most small pet races involve putting the animals right on the track and letting them run wild, hamster racing more closely resembles NASCAR as the hamsters are actually put inside wheels that push along little tiny racecars. While not all of the races involve the cars ?some just use balls, but the cars really do bring up the cute level drastically.

Oddly, while hamster racing is generally just a fun pet racing contest, it actually became a real gambling sport in England after a severe foot and mouth disease outbreak led to the cancellation of most horse races in 2001.

If you?re looking to get in on the action, PetCo hosts small, biannual hamster races in most of their stores, but if you?re planning to bet your paycheck, you?ll have to do it with your friends on the sly.

Mice

(Video Link)

The cool thing about mouse racing is that it can be as simple or as complicated as event organizers desire. Some people build massive, elaborate tracks, others build obstacle courses and some just put them on a flat track and let them run wild. This video features a good blend of the many possible varieties of mouse racetracks by offering a straight track with a few minor obstacles.

Guinea Pigs

(Video Link)

Cavy racing is a pretty small sport that?s not very well organized. In face, most of the races are between two pets belonging to the same family ?the race in the video is pretty massive in comparison. As far as I can tell though, the cream of the crop in annual Guinea pig races occurs at the Henry Lawson Festival in New South Wales, Australia.

Turtles and Tortoises

(Video Link)

Like guinea pig races, there are no huge organizations pushing tortoise racing, but they do still happen. The key to organizing these races is to keep the track short because you don?t want to be there all day waiting for your contestants to cross the finish line.

Hermit Crabs

(Video Link)

While you can always race your own pet hermit crabs, those without the shelled pets can always just book a visit from the National Crab Racing Association. The group will attend parties of all types with their highly-trained crab menagerie for your race-viewing pleasure ?just pick your crab and place your bet. And don?t worry about the poor retired crabs, the group adopts out all of their ex-racers to good homes.

Pigs

(Video Link)

While it?s easy to fall into debate on whether or not pigs count as livestock or pets, it?s pretty obvious that the pigs racing at fairs across the nation are family pets and not intended for consumption. While there are a few groups out there doing pig racing these days, the most famous is Hot Dog Pig Racing, which offers both pig and wiener dog racing. As an extra bonus, the dogs are usually dressed up like hot dogs!

Sheep

(Video Link)

Like pig racing, it?s hard to say if this is really a pet race or livestock race, but when I see a video of sheep racing with little stuffed sheep jockeys on their back, I have a hard time leaving them out of an article like this.

Have any of your pets ever participated in a race (horses and greyhounds exempted in this case)? Mine haven?t, but I?ve gotta say, I would really love to see a chinchilla race, even if their incredible jumping skills mean it would be a logistical nightmare.

In your future: More healthful foods to nourish the non-human you

ScienceDaily (Aug. 21, 2012) ? The focus of nutrition for good health is quietly shifting to include consumption of food ingredients specifically designed to nourish the non-human cells that comprise 80 percent of the cells in the typical person, an authority on the topic said on August 21 at a conference in Philadelphia.

Speaking at the 244th National Meeting & Exposition of the American Chemical Society, Robert Rastall, Ph.D., cited several factors driving these so-called "prebiotic" ingredients toward more foods. Food scientists, for instance, are developing new sources of the healthful substances for use in a variety of foods, and scientific evidence on the benefits of eating prebiotics is growing.

"Just as people need food to thrive, so do the billions of healthful bacteria that live in our guts, our gastrointestinal tract," Rastall explained. "There's a large and expanding body of scientific evidence that bacteria in the gut play a role in health and disease. Prebiotics are foods that contain nutrients that support the growth and activity of these friendly bacteria."

Rastall contrasted prebiotics to the more familiar "probiotics," already being promoted on the labels of food like yogurt and some dietary supplements. He heads the Department of Food and Nutritional Sciences at the University of Reading in the U.K. and is co-author of widely used textbooks on prebiotics and probiotics.

Probiotic foods actually contain friendly bacteria like Lactobacillus acidophilus believed to release healthful substances as they grow in the GI tract. Prebiotics are indigestible food ingredients that provide no nutrition to people. Their purpose is to nourish the friendly bacteria among the estimated 100 trillion microbes living inside the human GI tract.

Foods promoted for a prebiotic effect already are on the market in the European Union, and Rastall predicted that prebiotics will gain a greater foothold in Europe and the United States. One major advantage: Prebiotics do not require refrigeration like probiotic yogurt and other dairy products and could be incorporated into a wider range of foods.

Rastall noted that people get small amounts of one of the most common prebiotics, called inulin, from wheat, onions, garlic, chicory and certain other foods. He cited studies showing that when people eat more inulin and other prebiotics, the balance of microbes in the gut shifts to one linked to a range of health benefits.

To help people get more prebiotics in their diet, Rastall's team in the U.K., working with colleagues at the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Agricultural Research Service, is finding ways to make prebiotics from plant carbohydrates like pectins, mannans and xylans.

They are using plant biomass, like stems and husks, as sources for those carbohydrates, which then are converted to the shorter carbohydrates that make up prebiotics. The goal is preparation of prebiotic carbohydrates that have neutral tastes and can withstand heating so they could be easily added to processed foods. These new prebiotics also could be used as stand-alone dietary supplements, he added.

"Prebiotics may prove to be most useful in specific population groups and people with specific health problems rather than the general population," Rastall said. He cited, for instance, individuals with gastrointestinal diseases, Type-2 diabetes and low-grade inflammation linked to an increased risk of heart disease and other conditions, and people at risk for travelers' diarrhea.

Tony Scott's family denies reports he was suffering from brain cancer ...

In the wake of director Tony Scott?s apparent suicide on Sunday, ABC News, citing a source close to Scott, reported that the filmmaker was suffering from inoperable brain cancer at the time of his death. But according to the Los Angeles Times, Scott?s family is now denying the reports, which quickly circulated on-line, that the 68-year-old director had brain cancer. The Los Angeles County coroner?s office has not yet determined whether Scott?had any underlying health problems that might have driven him to take his own life by jumping off a bridge in San Pedro, Calif. Its final?report on the Top Gun director?s death will not be released until toxicology and other tests are finished, which will take several weeks.

In the meantime, ABC News has backed off its initial story, posting an update on its web site headlined, ?Tony Scott Brain Cancer Report Appears in Doubt.? 2012 Paris Auto Show: Electric and Plug-In Preview ? Elon Musk ...

JaguarC-X75 supercar

The $1.1-million Jaguar C-X75 plug-in hybrid supercar could make a reappearance at the Paris Motor Show in production trim.

Everything from plug-in supercars to electric-powered SUVs will greet visitors to the 2012 Paris Motor Show when the doors are opened to the public on September 29. We?ve gathered a quick preview to satiate your curiosity. Vehicle appearances are still being confirmed. As the time approaches, we will update the (growing) list of EVs and plug-ins set to make a debut in The City of Lights.

If you want plug-in-powered performance, few vehicles can top the sublime Jaguar C-X75 that appeared during the 2010 Paris show. When it first debuted two years ago, the C-X75 featured an impressive 68-mile electric-only driving range aided by micro-turbines. Electric motors located in each wheel delivered the equivalent of 780 hp and 1100 lb.-ft. of torque. Production models lose the experimental turbines, though a range-extended 1.6-liter turbocharged inline-4 offers supercar levels of speed, with economy and EV range unheard of in this stratosphere of the automotive world.

It?s possible Jaguar could show the car in near-production trim, since the British automaker has confirmed its intentions to build a limited run of the C-X75 at more than $1-million apiece. If that doesn?t quite fit your budget, we?ve come up with a few more affordable options that should sate your EV desires at a fraction of the cost.

Mitsubishi Outlander Plug-In Hybrid

Mitsubishi is looking to reinvent itself as a brand focused on economy and electric powertrains. Slow sales indicate the jury is still out on the company?s?i-MiEV?(sold in the U.S. as the ?i?), but the upcoming Outlander Plug-In Hybrid could hit the sweet spot of everyday practicality and plug-in efficiency. The Outlander PHEV will offer three different 4WD modes: Pure (twin-motor electric-only drive), Series (twin-motor electric drive supported by range-extending generator) and Parallel (ICE engine supported by twin-motor electric drive). And unlike the i, which is limited to approximately 60 miles of EV range, the Outlander PHEV should offer a total driving range approaching 500 miles.

Volkswagen Golf Plug-In Hybrid

Routinely the best-selling car in Europe, the Golf is finally going green?perhaps to match the profits it reaps for the VW brand? The VW Golf Plug-In Hybrid will be based on the German automaker?s flexible MQB architecture, which allows for a vast range of powertrains and body styles. Online rumblings hint at an EV driving range of roughly 30 miles, which puts the car right in the thick of competitors such as the?Ford C-Max Energi?and?Chevrolet Volt. Coupled to VW?s TwinCharger 1.4-liter inline-4, performance should be peppy and the Golf?s practical hatchback design could make it a strong contender. One big question mark is pricing. If VW can keep costs in check, the Golf PHEV could be a winner.

Nissan Electric SUV Concept

Nissan is not about to give up its head start in the EV market. The Japanese automaker will show an electric SUV concept at this year?s Paris auto show. Computer generated images of the concept show a smooth and clean-looking sport-utility that, at a glance, looks about the size of the current Rogue crossover. There are clear?signs that electric powertrains will migrate to the world of SUVs. The only problem might be range, given that sport-utes and crossovers routinely weigh more than sedans and station wagons. We won?t throw a number in the air, but our guess is that Nissan?s SUV concept offers substantially more range than the current LEAF. (There is more room for larger battery packs.) A production version should arrive within one to two years.

Renault ZOE

The biggest challenge facing the Renault ZOE EV is the dismal state of the European economy. This French hatchback is scheduled to go into production late this year, or early in 2013 if Europe?s fiscal problems remain dire. After all, even the best EV isn?t going to find buyers if no one can afford to buy a new car. While we?ve seen the ZOE before, most recently at the Geneva Auto Show, it will be interesting to gauge local reaction to this sleek little city-car. The exterior is clean and contemporary, while the promised EV range falls in line with other small electric-powered vehicles, about 70 to 100 miles, depending on weather and driving conditions. In France, the ZOE?s base price is approximately $19,500, with EV tax incentives factored in.

LETTING YOUTH LEAD THE WAY: A Report from the Youth - Blog

By Susan Crites Price

If you want something done, put youth in charge.

Youth in Action at the 2nd Annual Youth Philanthropy Connect conference

Youth in Action at the 2nd Annual Youth Philanthropy Connect conference

When the first-ever conference for family foundation next generation board members wrapped up last year, the young attendees (ages 8 through 18) wanted to keep the momentum going. They had learned so much from their peers that they wanted to stay connected. ?They drew up an ambitious list of goals, among them:? hold a second conference in the same place?the Disneyland conference center in California; use social media to expand their network to other young grantmakers around the country; and form a leadership team to spearhead the effort.

The Frieda C. Fox Foundation and Executive Director Dana Marcus provided support ?but the kids took the lead,? she stresses. They came up with a name, Youth Philanthropy Connect; voted online for a logo (donated by a dad who is a graphic designer); and created their own Facebook page and website hosted on the Fox Foundation site. The leadership team members took turns chairing planning meetings via videoconference. Documents were posted in a shared workspace through Onehub.com. (If kids can plan a whole conference this way, there?s no reason family funds can?t have a junior board make grants even when they live in different parts of the country.)

The results were impressive. July?s Youth Philanthropy Connect conference was larger and meatier with the youth clearly in charge. Plenary audiences were a mix of the youth and adults including parents, grandparents, experts and nonprofit leaders. But it was the YPC leadership team members who handled hosting duties, introduced the speakers, produced the program, dealt with conference logistics, and staffed the registration desk.

Groups of next gen board members gave inspiring presentations about their own foundations, reminding adults in the audience not to underestimate the capabilities of the young. After the Tarsadia Foundation?s junior board presented a moving Powerpoint about their foundation?s work, including overseas mission projects, Shirish Dayal, the foundation?s executive director, was as impressed as the rest of us. ?It?s the first time I?ve seen it,? he revealed.

Alan Fox, president of the Fox Foundation, wasn?t surprised at the capability of the youth leaders. ?In my book, any eight year old is entirely capable of having and expressing strong feelings, rational thoughts, and valid opinions.?? That?s why his foundation has long had a junior board with kids as young as 8, and has pledged ongoing support for YPC.

The opening lunch featured Lana Volftsun, who heads the One Percent Foundation which connects Millennials with collective giving opportunities. A member of the National Center for Family Philanthropy?s Issues Advisory Committee, Volftsun is on the board of her family?s foundation and shared a moving story of her personal journey into philanthropy and her ?ah ha? moment when she realized that any young person can and should be a philanthropist even if they don?t have a lot of money. ?Breakout topics for the youth included careers in nonprofits and philanthropy, how to write and read grant proposals, grantmaking basics and legal and financial issues. Adults attended sessions to explore their role in encouraging youth grantmaking, not just with their own family members but with others.

Among the conference speakers were several people who lead youth philanthropy programs around the country including Heather Jacks of Future Philanthropists; Amy Kurzeka Johnson of Classrooms for Change; Skye DeLano, E3 Youth Philanthropy; and Stefanie Zelkind, the Jewish Teen Funders Network.

On the theory that kids learn best by doing, they also made grants. During the conference, eight nonprofits who serve youth made presentations about their work and competed for $500 grants from a budget of $2,500 supplied by conference sponsors. The youth again turned to technology with help from Mark Larimer, co-founder of Foundant Technologies [link] and a YPC sponsor. He provided his company?s grant management software so the youth could each review the grant applications online and then come together in a giving circle on the conference?s last day to choose the grant winners.

Want to learn more?

FGN readers who want to learn more about YPC?s effort to connect youth grantmakers with their peers, and also get ideas for their own next gen boards can:

  • Visit YPC?s website and join their Facebook page.
  • Watch the conference video which will be coming soon.
  • Consider attending next year?s conference which will be held June 19-22, 2013, at the Disney Grand Californian Conference Center. (For more information, contact Dana Marcus, dmarcus@fcfox.org)
  • Attend YPC?s Learning Lab Oct. 8 at the Association of Small Foundation?s national conference in San Francisco

Richard's Real Estate and Urban Economics Blog: Trending is ...

Niall Ferguson is horrified at the prospect that total Chinese GDP will catch the US in 2017. ?Let us leave aside for a second the fact that if China's total GDP matches the US', its people will still be less than 1/4 as affluent, or the fact that maybe it would be a good thing if the most populace country in the world had living standards comparable to ours. ?So far as I can tell, his 2017 projection comes from assuming growth in China will continue over the next several years at the same pace it has experienced since 1989. ?Such projections are always problematic.

Let me give one example. ?From 1890 until 1920, Los Angeles population grew by about 11 fold, from ?50 thousand to 576 thousand. ?If one assumed that this would continue, Los Angeles' population 90 years later, in 2010, would have been 576,000*11^3, or about 766 million, which is a shade under the population of the entire Western Hemisphere. ?Its actual population is around 4 million.

Is this absurd? ?Of course. ?But I have been seeing similar forecasts based on similar foundations since I was in college (when a very well-known professor projected that the USSR would have a larger economy than the US by the year 2000). ? ?This kind of "analysis" has been driving me crazy for years.

Web snares Vietnam as bloggers spread protests over land

HANOI (Reuters) - Farmer Le Dung and his fellow villagers stockpiled rocks and petrol bombs to battle police trying to take over their land for a luxury property development near Vietnam's capital city.

But their most powerful weapon turned out to be the equipment they had set up with the help of Internet activists to record and broadcast the confrontation, which was ignored by state-controlled media.

Within hours of the fight on a clear April morning, video of several thousand police firing tear gas and beating farmers in the Van Giang district just east of Hanoi had gone viral.

The unlikely alliance between farmers and urban Internet activists illustrates a rapidly evolving challenge to the Communist government's authority as Vietnamese grow bolder in their protests over issues ranging from land rights to corruption and China's expanding regional influence.

Vietnam has responded with a crackdown on bloggers that has earned it the title of "Enemy of the Internet" from media freedom group Reporters Without Borders, which says only China and Iran jail more journalists.

Censors in the one-party state routinely block Facebook and other social networking sites, although a nimble Web activist community often finds ways around them, illustrating the enormous challenge facing the government in a country where a third of the 88 million population is online.

"At first we didn't understand how it could help us but now we see the value. Our struggle was published to the world," said Le Dung, who fought in Vietnam's 1979 war against China, as he sat under a framed picture of late Communist leader Ho Chi Minh.

"If we hadn't used the Internet the authorities may have killed us; now they know they have to be careful."

The Van Giang incident and other land disputes covered by bloggers have triggered an unusually heated national debate over how the government should reform Vietnam's land laws before the expiry of farmers' 20-year public land leases in 2013.

Rapid economic growth has put pressure on farmers as industrial estates, houses, and roads have expanded, leading to a rash of violent land conflicts. Farmers complain the compensation offers for their land are far too low from companies that often have ties to influential politicians.

Fish farmer Doan Van Vuon was catapulted to hero status early this year after he organized armed resistance to local authorities trying to take over his land near Hai Phong city, a case that was covered by official media as well as bloggers.

CHINA RESENTMENT SPURS BLOGGERS

Bloggers are linking land with other causes they say have a common theme -- a government that is beholden to powerful economic interests and unresponsive to popular demands.

"The blogging movement is growing stronger," said Nguyen Van Dai, a lawyer and rights activist who was jailed for four years for using the Internet to call for democracy and who remains under a loose form of house arrest in Hanoi.

"The government can't keep secrets like it could before."

One influential activist, who goes by the pseudonym Boris and works at a state-owned firm, helped educate the farmers at Van Giang about their rights and taught them how to send pictures and videos through cellphones. Although about 1,000 families there have so far failed to stop the 500-hectare Ecopark project, Boris said wide publicity from the incident had prevented other land developers going ahead with similar plans.

Boris, who boasts he could bring 1,000 people onto Hanoi's streets at a day's notice, said he had also played a key role in organizing regular protests against China's territorial goals in the South China Sea -- a claim backed by other bloggers. The government allowed anti-China protests to go ahead last year, but soon clamped down on them after it became clear they could be a lightning rod for broader discontent.

Some activists exhibit a boldness that is startling, considering the stiff jail terms that have been handed down to others for "anti-government propaganda".

Alfonso Le, a 42-year-old blogger who writes the "Homeland Arise" blog, spoke to Reuters at a tiny Hanoi cafe within earshot of a green-uniformed police officer across the room.

"Now that social networks are more popular, it's not so easy for the police to arrest people," said Le, using his Facebook nickname. "If the police make trouble, I just send a status message on Facebook and a lot of people will come."

His activism has come at a price. He said he has been arrested three times and divorced his wife after she gave information to the police.

Another blogger, who asked not to be identified, also occupies the world of tolerated blogging. She believes she is safe as long as her writing stays within certain "red lines". In her blog, a protest march might be described as a "parade" or a "walk".

Still, she is sometimes followed by police and was arrested at an anti-China protest this month and kept for a day at a rehabilitation camp for "drug users and prostitutes".

"They (the authorities) are scared to death after what has happened in Burma and the Arab Spring," she said.

Former military officer Le Thanh Tung became the latest online activist to be punished this month, receiving a five-year sentence after a trial that lasted an hour, according to Reporters Without Borders. That came less than a week after blogger Dinh Dang Dinh was handed a six-year sentence.

The trial of three other high-profile bloggers was postponed this month after the mother of one of them committed suicide by setting herself on fire.

FUTILE CRACKDOWN?

Washington has voiced concern to Vietnam over a proposed new decree that would require Internet users to register with their real names, enabling the government to track its online critics more easily.

But Carl Thayer, a Vietnam expert at the Australian Defence Force Academy, said the government's attempts to control the Internet were probably futile given the web's deep penetration and bloggers' talent for sidestepping technological barriers.

Vietnam has among the world's fastest-growing rates of Internet use, according to market-research firm Cimigo.

Internet penetration in Hanoi and the southern commercial capital Ho Chi Minh City has risen above 50 percent.

"It is a battle I don't think the Vietnamese government is going to win," Thayer said.

The thorny problem of land rights, which goes to the heart of the Communist Party's legitimacy in its traditional power base of more than 10 million farmers, is where the bloggers have had the biggest impact.

In the wake of the Van Giang and Hai Phong violence, some lawmakers and academics have called for private land ownership to help protect farmers -- an unthinkable proposal until recently in a country where the state's ownership of all land is enshrined in the constitution.

Nguyen Duc Kien, the vice chairman of the National Assembly's economic committee, told Reuters the country's Land Law would be revised and that farmers would be allowed to remain on their land after 2013. Literally interpreted, the current law allows the state to take back farms without any compensation at the end of the lease period.

"Land is an issue that is a potential cause of tension in society," he said.

Nguyen's and other comments from officials have convinced blogger activists that the leases will be extended, although that in itself will not resolve the problem of land grabs by private developers backed by the state.

"The bloggers were a big part of that," said the blogger Le. "We told a different side of the story. We showed that the ruling party's words don't match its actions."

Need Some Ideas For Home Improvement? Try These Great Tips

Mini blinds may not seem like a home improvement, but anything that changes the look and feel of a room can be just that. Whether you buy the less expensive vinyl blinds or get the designer wooden blinds, they make great improvements to each room that you put them in.

If you are in need of a home improvement project, consider an extension on your home. Extensions can be added to the exterior or the interior of your home and expand on space you already have but aren?t using. For example, loft spaces can be created out of rooms with cathedral ceilings, or a finished attic can act as an extra bedroom.

When looking for someone to help you with home improvements, do your research. This is important because you do not want an inexperienced or unskilled person working on your home. Ask around for a good worker from family and friends or go online and look for reviews on home contractors in your area.

When you are looking to take care of the cluttered attic or garage in your home, take full advantage of the first few weeks of the fall or the early springtime so that you can empty the contents of the spaces, organize effectively and be comfortable while you do so.

Updating your home with new appliances will not only make your home look better but perhaps save you money in the long run. New appliances can save you money because newer appliances are more efficient. Look into buying energy saving appliances and see if you qualify for tax credits.

If you plan on painting your inside walls, ceiling, or door a dark color, tin the white primer close to the color you plan on using. You can find tints at most hardware stores for most types of paints. Tinting the primer will save you a coat or two of painting.

Recover your old couch! More than likely you are tired of it because the cover is no longer attractive. If you have even the most basic of sewing skills you can fix that all on your own. Carefully tear off the old cover piece by piece. Use the pieces as patterns to cut new pieces from newly purchased material. Sew it all together and you have a brand new look!

If you are looking to recreate your dining room living space, you can sand down your old table and refinish it. While this is a lengthy task, a new finish can make an old table look like new again. If you do this, make sure you take your time so it looks great.

Painting is an easy do it yourself home improvement, but remember to always use primer. Sometimes you may be tempted to skip the primer but it really produces an excellent surface for the application of fresh paint. Also having a coat of primer beneath the paint will bring out the paints true color.

When it comes to recouping your investments on home improvements, it is vital to keep in mind how long you are planning to own the property. Depending on the project, it can take many years to get the value back out of a home improvement you have made. If you are not going to keep the house for several years, concentrate on only home improvements that add value for potential home buyers.

Not only does full-scale remodeling cost a lot of money, it is often not necessary. With the information provided in this article, we hope you feel confident that you have the skills necessary to make a dramatic change in the look of your home with only a few basic modifications. Have fun planning your next project!

Edison who? Cartoonist starts online fundraiser to save Nikola Tesla's lab

3 hrs.

"He gave us so much and we gave him so little in return," cartoonist Matthew "The Oatmeal" Inman explains while speaking about inventor Nikola Tesla. "And the fact that he doesn't even have his own museum is a testament to that."

Frustrated by this thought, Inman did what any Internet-famous 29-year-old would do: He started an online fundraiser to purchase Tesla's old lab, Wardenclyffe, in Long Island, NY,?and turn it into a Tesla museum.

And given Inman's ability to churn out viral content and his prior online fundraising success, he might just pull this one off.

Even though many people don't recognize his name, Inman?is an incredibly popular cartoonist. You've probably seen plenty of his work?? such as "10 Words You Need To Stop Misspelling,"??"What It's Like To Own An Apple Product," or "Cat vs Internet"?? in your?Facebook?feed, on Twitter, or on your favorite blog at some point. It's almost impossible to avoid this man online.?

After recently turning a lawsuit threat into an incredibly successful fundraiser which raised $211,223.04 for charity and creating an incredibly popular?? and slightly not-so-safe-for-work?? comic about Tesla, Inman says he feels "ideally situated to help out."

In late July, he?heard that a?non-profit organization?? the?Tesla Science Center at Wardenclyffe, formerly known as Friends of Science East, Inc ??is attempting to purchase Tesla's laboratory, the foundation of the now-demolished Wardenclyffe tower, and any connected land in order to build a Nikola Tesla museum. The property itself is priced at $1.6 million, but the non-profit organization has received a matching grant from New York state in the amount of $850,000. This means that if the organization raises $850,000, it will wind up with $1.7 million ??enough to purchase the property, if they can beat any competing bidders to the punch.

Things are looking pretty good right now?though. In a day's time, Inman's fundraiser, dubbed "Operation: Let's Build A Goddamn Museum," has?collected $448,000.

Inman's not relaxing just yet though. "If we raise the $850k, this will get us enough capital to buy the land and keep it a historic site, but it won't give us enough to build an actual museum," he says. "I'm hoping that if we secure the land a sponsor like Larry Page, GE, J.P. Morgan, Tesla Motors, or anyone else who is interested could step in and fund it the rest of the way, which would require something closer to an eight to ten million dollar investment."

In order to entice such sponsors, Inman included messages in a comic discussing the fundraiser.?

"One hundred years ago you believed in Tesla and backed him financially. Honor his legacy and help him out again," he writes, addressing financial firm?J.P. Morgan.?

"I read that Larry Page is a huge fan of Tesla," Inman points out, in an attempt to cajole the company Page founded into opening its checkbook.?

He throws in a general plea, in his typically?humorous fashion:?"Someone? Anyone? Sponsoring this museum would be the PR equivalent of having your CEO jump into an icy river and save a herd of drowning kittens. Don't you want to save some kittens?"

Those attempts to entice sponsors aside, Inman admits that's not the primary focus at the moment. "Right now we just want to get the property and keep it in the hands of the Wardenclyffe non-profit," he says. "I figured once that's done we've got years and years to fund the rest."

"Despite all he did for us [Tesla] suffered and died completely broke, and up until recently no one had any idea who he was," Inman says, when asked about what drives him to champion the fundraiser. "I want this museum to be a bit of an apology from mankind for being a bit crappy, greedy, and myopic while he was alive."

Bill Corbett Discusses the Art of Movie Riffing

Manos: The Hands Of Fate is the subject of a live Rifftrax performance being beamed to more than 500 movie theaters tonight.

"A couple of years ago, we did something that we called a 'Rifftrax challenge,'" says Bill Corbett, who serves as a professional bad-movie-mocker at Rifftrax.com. "We took a movie that we all acknowledge is a great movie, Casablanca, and riffed it. In that case it becomes more like a celebrity roast ? we all acknowledge it's great, but we kid around with it knowing that we can't do it any harm. It'll outlive us."

There is no one-size-fits-all process for recording sardonic commentaries, and the Rifftrax's resulting Casablanca track ? available as an MP3 from Rifftrax, and synchable with a DVD ? takes a different tone than their commentary for, say, Twilight. "With Casablanca, we found that you just can't make fun of that movie too much and sort of assert that it's incompetent, because it's obviously not, so you wind up sort of imposing stuff on it, and scoring jokes off moments that seem a little awkward." Sample jokes: "Sam ? the original one-hit wonder"; "A French guy who fights back ? we found him!"; "How come when Bogie drinks during the day, people think he's sophisticated, but when I do it, all I hear is, 'Get off our little league field!'"

Corbett knows the subtle nuances of bad movie mockery well. For three seasons, he was a writer and performer on the seminal puppets-making-fun-of-bad-movies cable series Mystery Science Theater 3000. In a conceit that launched a thousand internet comedians, MST3K centered on a human and his two robot companions who were forced to watch bad movies (their silhouettes were seen at the bottom-right of the frame, against the backdrop of such pearls as Bride of the Monster, Santa Claus Conquers the Martians, and Space Mutiny). To keep their sanity, they provided commentary ? sometimes literary, sometimes very silly.

In this clip, the guys of Mystery Science Theater take apart the credits of the very bad film, Cave Dwellers.

Currently, Corbett and MST3K alumni Mike Nelson and Kevin Murphy keep the flame alive ? sans puppets and silhouettes ? with Rifftrax, which creates MP3 commentaries of Hollywood product (The Phantom Menace, Thor, Paranormal Activity, etc.). In recent years, the site has evolved to incorporate video-on-demand downloads (Frankenstein Island, The Bloody Pit of Horror, Plan 9 from Outer Space) and an annual live broadcast, beamed into 500 theaters nationwide.

For this year's August 16 broadcast (that's tonight!), Nelson, Murphy, and Corbett will return to MST3K's most notorious discovery: Manos: The Hands of Fate (1966), a creepy, no-budget oddity about a tribe of Satanists in the El Paso wilderness. Made by Texas fertilizer salesman Harold P. Warren, Manos has become bad-movie legend. Among the lore: Warren used wind-up camera that could shoot only 32 seconds at a time; the film was shot silent, with the entire cast dubbed by three people; opening credits were to be superimposed over the endless opening montage of El Paso scenery, but Warren forgot. With its total disregard for basic film grammar, Manos is something downright otherworldly.

Manos may be one of the worst movies ever made, but a full-on beatdown of Warren's sad little film would be like kicking a wounded puppy. "I think more of our humor winds up being, for Manos, winds up being about pure bafflement at the whole affair," Corbett says. "Like, 'How did this happen? Why was this choice made? Can you believe that they're actually cutting from this scene to this scene again?' Like, there's a bunch of times where they just ran out of film in the camera, or they didn't have a good enough camera, so two people are standing there, and then there's a cut, and it's to them standing there again, presumably in real time."

Certainly Warren's quixotic attempt at cinema is more endearingly pathetic than a big-budget target like Transformers, and emits a different brand of desperation than Plan 9 from Outer Space, or Laser Mission, or Neutron the Atomic Superman vs. the Death Robots, or any other Rifftrax subject. "I think it does get really tiresome to just hear three guys be jerks about something," Corbett says. "You can't just be a voice of generic sarcasm, you have to be funny and clever and occasionally a little more generous, and shift your point of view here and there so you're not always making fun of the movie so much. So we try to keep light on our feet about that stuff, and hopefully the sum total of it is, y'know, not just too mean-spirited and sour. Although, there are moments when I listen to our stuff in retrospect and I just go, 'Ugh, we were just in that gear too long ? I don't like those guys right now.'"

Perhaps one of those moments was in MST3K's tenth season, when the crew tackled Final Justice, starring portly character actor Joe Don Baker. After the show's first encounter with Baker ? Mitchell, in season five ? the star reportedly told press he would "kick their asses," and for Final Justice, the MST3K silhouettes tore into his physique with gleeful brutality: "He's got double chins on his eyelids" ... "Meatloaf: Texas Ranger" ... "A float got loose! Oh, no, it's Joe Don Baker, sorry" ... "It's dangerous for Joe Don to be in the water ? someone's bound to harpoon him." At one point, when Baker chugs a tall glass of milk, a member of the MST3K peanut gallery speculates, "His arteries are just looking at each other, shaking their heads."

But central to MST3K (and now Rifftrax) is the tightrope it walks between critical astuteness and mean-spiritedness ? between having-fun and making-fun (harsh as they were to the poor man, Mr. Baker sure made himself a tempting target by posing an action star). That Rifftrax's motto has changed from "We don't make movies ? we make fun of them" to the less nihilistic "We don't make movies ? we make them funny" acknowledges the challenge. The secret to MST3K and Rifftrax at their best is a certain backhanded affection for the bad movies under assault. More than the snarkfest it was sometimes accused of being, MST3K was best understood as a harder-edged '90s equivalent of TV horror-hosts like Svenghouli or Vampira.

Corbett says, "The Hollywood movies like Twilight or Transformers, we tend to be a little harder on the 'Hollywood' aspect ? 'you had all these resources and this is what you did with it?' Whereas, I know it's a little pretentious, but there's a little more of a curation aspect to some of these old, weird movies. Like, 'Can you believe this exists?'"
