Women's Health Day: Lampitt tells Christie to reverse anti-women policies

Wednesday, 26 September 2012 13:05

BY PAMELA LAMPITT
COMMENTARY

As we celebrate National Women's Health and Fitness Day today, it is important for our elected leaders to be true advocates for women's health. Unfortunately in New Jersey, Governor Christie seems content to just pay lip service to women's health issues, as he panders to the extreme-right wing in service of his national political ambitions.

When it comes to women's access to critical preventive health services--like breast and cervical cancer screenings, HIV/STI testing, and family planning-- Chris Christie has rejected common-sense, fiscally-responsible investments in New Jersey. Yet unbelievably, he has found millions of dollars for reckless tax cuts for millionaires.

It's time for the Governor to stop courting the support of the Tea Party and start standing up for the women of New Jersey.

Assemblywoman Pamela Lampitt (D-Camden/Burlington) is the Women and Children Committee Chair.

Fool's Gold (2008): The Vangor Family History

Fool's Gold (2008): The Vangor Family History

The clip The Vangor family history from Fool's Gold (2008) Where every known record, official transcript and royal decree... ...relating to the fleets has been kept for centuries. At first it was for fun, but then we decided to look up the Aurelia... ...because of the cannon we'd found in Florida, and it became our pet project. Especially when we learned the captain was an 18-year-old kid named Sebastian Vangor. Who we also discovered was the illegitimate son... ...of Captain General Don Juan Ubilla of the Capitana... ...and his Mexican mistress, Francesca Vangor. We thought it was an interesting sidebar and really didn't think much more of it... ...until Tess found this very obscure Spanish book published in 1905... ...titled, The Vangors: an 18th Century Family. It was a collection of letters. So why is this important? Because the Vangors controlled the mule train that transported the Dowry... ...over the mountains from the Pacific to the Caribbean... ...and then loaded it onto Spanish galleons here in Veracruz. So I'm reading this, and all of a sudden I start hyperventilating... ...because there it is right in front of me in Ubilla's last letter to Francesca. He wrote: "My faith in the Aurelia is that she is swift and light... ...and can outrun the storms we will most certainly encounter. But it is my faith in Sebastian that knows no bounds. Our son is good and strong and wiser than this old fool... ...who leaves your bed more and more reluctantly. The glory of the Spanish Crown rests in his capable hands." So... ...Ubilla pulled a switch. Mm. With the Vangors' help. And moved the Queen's Dowry from the Capitana to the supply ship. Because? The Capitana was already way overloaded... ...so it was very heavy and very slow. It wasn't just hurricanes they had to worry about. British warships, French privateers, you name it.

Parenthood (1989): Awkward Family Gathering Part 2

The clip Awkward family gathering Part 2 from Parenthood (1989) with Jason Robards, Steve Martin Great to see you! Shit. Well put. Who's that? That's my kid brother Larry, your uncle. Don't give him any money. I won't. Just a little something for being the best dad in the world. I found it a couple of months ago. It's for your collection. A toy car! Oh, this is great! A Stutz! Yeah, if you've got it, spend it on the people you love. Right? Is this Grandma? Yeah, she's still alive. Jesus! Grandma, you got short. I'm shrinking. Bummer! Gilbo! How long has it been? Three years? About that. You stopped wearing your turban. Yeah. My God! Susan, you look great. If you weren't my sister- I know it's been hard. Dad? You were supposed to wait outside so I could introduce you. Well, why don't you do it now, Larry? Everybody... this is my son, Cool. Did he say "Cool"? Cool. Your son? It's a long story. Let's eat. Keep Patty away from my brother. He'll suck the intelligence out of her.

I Went To Visit The Roses - James Yorkston & Big Eyes Family Players (Music Video)

I Went To Visit The Roses - James Yorkston & Big Eyes Family Players (Music Video)

James Yorkston, resident of the East Neuk of Fife, returns in the company of The Big Eyes Family Players with a new album of traditional songs from the length and breadth of the Great Britain & Ireland and one tune from Galicia in Spain. After a decade which has seen folk music morph into nu-folk, mobile phone-ad folk, mortgage-folk, smoothie-folk and so on, Yorkston has reached back into the tradition of song and place and drawn a line in the sand. I Went To Visit The Roses A second Irish one from Peter Kennedys collection. Again, I was initially drawn by the lyric so built a melody around it. There are alternative lyrics where the hero is seen as not quite so polite, but this was the first one I came across, so it made sense to stick to it. The harmonium in the middle sections was recorded on an old English instrument with Mouse Proof pedals, which I found in the street in Edinburgh. It takes a fair bit of fit-blawin mouse proof or not, its bellows are holier than thou.-I Went To Visit The Roses

TOM AND JERRY CHUCK JONES COLLECTION: Movie Trailer

TOM AND JERRY CHUCK JONES COLLECTION: Movie Trailer

34 hilarious animated shorts lovingly remastered! The classic cartoon chase involving forever frustrated feline Tom and mightily mobile mouse Jerry got spun in new and deliciously inventive ways when animation legend Chuck Jones set up shop at the team's home studio and produced the 34 wonderful shorts in this Deluxe 2-Disc Collection. Tom got furrier cheeks and thicker eyebrows. Jerry got larger eyes and ears and a more sweet-natured expression. But Jones and his collaborators put them through their hilarious misadventures with renewed personality and style and also cleverly parodied pop culture as well. The result now viewable in widescreen format for the first time in decades as originally shown in theatres is a meeting of animation icons that's endlessly entertaining.

Wal-Mart India stores coming due to landmark agreement ?

NEW DELHI ? India agreed Friday to open its huge market to foreign retailers such as Wal-Mart in a surprising decision that was part of a flurry of economic reforms aimed at sparking new growth in the country?s sputtering economy.

The Cabinet?s decision ? after a similar proposal was withdrawn under withering criticism last year ? immediately generated optimism that a government plagued by scandal was finally breaking out of the political paralysis that had stifled reforms for months.

?This is a landmark decision in India?s economic reforms process,? said Rajan Bharti Mittal, whose retail company, Bharti Enterprises, has a joint venture with Wal-Mart.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said the reforms were made to spur economic growth and to attract foreign investment.

??I believe that these steps will help strengthen our growth process and generate employment in these difficult times,? he wrote on his Twitter account, appealing for public support.

However, political opponents and even some allies, decried the decision to allow in international supermarket chains, saying it would hurt small retailers and farmers.

?(It) will lead to job losses for millions of our people,? D. Raja, a Communist Party lawmaker, told the NDTV news channel.

The Cabinet also agreed to allow foreign investment in airlines and to sell stakes in state-owned companies. On Thursday, the government decided to reduce fuel subsidies and allow the price of diesel to rise, a move hailed by the business community but criticized by political allies and opponents.

The decision on retail investment Friday would allow foreign firms to own a majority stake in multi-brand retailers here for the first time. However, individual states would have the right to decide whether to let the retailers operate from their territory.

States led by the ruling Congress party would be most likely to allow them, meaning the big cities of New Delhi and Mumbai would have new shopping options.

U.S.-based Wal-Mart, British-based Tesco PLC, French-based retailer Carrefour and others have been interested in entering India, a country of 1.2 billion people where retail is the second-biggest industry behind agriculture.

Commerce Minister Anand Sharma said India badly needed the infrastructure investment that would come from these firms. Currently, about 35 to 40 percent of produce rots before it gets to the stores, he said.

Under the Cabinet decision, at least 50 percent of the foreign investment would have to be in back-end infrastructure, such as processing, distribution and storage.

??It will generate large numbers of jobs in rural India for our men and women,? Sharma said.

The government said farmers would benefit because less of their produce would rot, small retailers would become more competitive and efficient and consumers will get lower prices and better quality. The policy would also bring in badly needed inflows of investment and foreign currency.

The government had agreed on the same proposal last year but then withdrew that decision because of protests from coalition partners, a capitulation that badly damaged its credibility with international investors.

Since then, economic growth has fallen, with business leaders and analysts blaming the government?s inability to make needed reforms.

Kunal Ghosh, a spokesman for government ally Trinamool Congress, said his party continued to oppose the plan but would not say whether it would withdraw support from the coalition.

The government relaxed rules on foreign investment in the broadcast industry and in power exchanges, which provides a platform for companies to buy and sell power.

The government also agreed to sell minority stakes in its oil, copper and aluminum companies as well as its Metals and Minerals Trading Corporation.

The main opposition Bharatiya Janata Party criticized the surprise decisions.

??We consider it as a betrayal of the country, betrayal of the Parliament by this government,? said Balbir Punj, of the BJP.

The government?s decision on airline investment would allow foreign airlines to own up to 49 percent of an Indian airline. India?s airline industry has expanded enormously in recent years, but only one airline has been able to turn a consistent profit. The government-owned Air India and the private Kingfisher have both suffered from labor strife and financial problems.

Aviation Minister Ajit Singh said the decision ??sends a very clear message to a sector that has been under stress.?

But it was not clear if any foreign airlines would be interested in buying a minority interest in some of India?s most struggling airlines.

The government also made a key change to its decision earlier this year to allow foreign retailers selling only a single brand to own 100 percent of their stores, a decision largely seen as aimed at bringing furniture retailer IKEA to India.

The previous decision forced the company to source 30 percent of their products from small cottage industries. Now, it can source that 30 percent from any Indian industry.

Why Is Virus And Spyware Prevention Software Essential? | Great ...

Today it is very practical to purchase software which specializes in virus prevention. New laptops or computers are often furnished with these programs although they are generally trial packages. Today on the net there?s plenty of hazards, therefore trying to keep computers secure from the threats is the main purpose of such software. A lot of people might not find them essential because they?re not familiar with the technological elements of the internet and PCs. Just like their name these computer viruses are just like real viruses such as the flu, but these harm laptops or computers. PC viruses are just computer software with the design of replicating themselves after they have infected a PC. The fact that they make a replica of themselves upon infecting PCs is a defining character of almost every virus. The main objective behind infecting someone`s computer system is largely to aggravate them or severely breach their personal or financial safety. Due to the fact there are other viruses like spyware and malware which affect the efficiency of computers, it is important to know about viruses and which type they are. Most people believe that if they install a free virus protection software they get satisfactory protection from malicious intruders. This may be a serious mistake because free versions of the software program usually discover viruses, but don?t remove or quarantine them. You must remember these viruses dont merely ruin computers, but often ruin people`s lives as well. So be sure to buy good virus prevention software and dont skimp becuase there?s a lot at risk. When it comes to gaining the private information of their victims a `back door trojan` virus can be used by cyber-criminals for accessing someone`s Personal computer. Some very highly sensitive private information can be sent to the cyber-criminal this way including account numbers, charge card numbers, verification codes and passwords to bank accounts. Keystrokes from your computer can be collected by spyware key logger programs which are highly malicious and this data might also be transmitted to cyber-criminals. Lots of people often don?t even know that their system is infected by spyware or how these cyber criminals managed to install it onto their PC. As a consequence, even before these users can be warned about any unusual activities from their accounts by the banks or credit card providers their charge cards and bank accounts already are drained. This wrecks peoples lives and quite often result in their identity being stolen. Thus, to guarantee full protection for a computer, people should use both anti-virus and spyware prevention software programs. With the right programs almost all of malicious internet threats are taken care of and don?t turn into a threat to the computer system. It is vital that the software program chosen is trustworthy and proven to be effective. It is advised to do an internet search on virus prevention or spyware prevention software and check out a good review site to assist you to find one. Nowadays, there are products on the market that are internet protection suites which provide both anti-virus and spyware protection. These do both for a resonable price. Remember in this day and age, it is important to keep our PCs protected from viruses and spyware.

Jillian Jensen Breaks Down, Impresses on The X Factor

Darn you, The X Factor. You got us.

Sometimes, even when we're know we're being emotionally manipulated, we can't help but give in to the waterworks. Case in point from last night's season two premiere of The X Factor:

Jillian Jensen, a young woman whose history of being bullied gave her a clear connection to Demi Lovato. Watch Jensen give it her all during her initial audition and then break down in the arms of this new judge:

Other contestants that stood out from the premiere:

  • Reed Deming, a 13-year old with shaggy, Justin Bieber-like hair.
  • Paige Thomas, a favorite of L.A. Reid's.
  • Jennel Garcia, a young rocker who closed the show on a very positive note.

THE RACE: Dynamics of presidential contest shifted

This year, the "October Surprise" that sometimes erupts late in presidential cycles came a month early.

Attacks on American diplomatic outposts in countries swept up in the Arab Spring are changing the dynamics of the contest between President Barack Obama and Republican challenger Mitt Romney. For now, at least, national security is center stage.

Romney supporters see a parallel with 1980, when the economy was struggling and President Jimmy Carter was burdened with a hostage crisis at the U.S. embassy in Tehran. Republican Ronald Reagan won handily.

Comparing Obama to the one-term Carter already had become a popular GOP attack theme even before this week's deadly assault on the U.S. mission in Libya and attacks on U.S. embassies in Egypt and Yemen.

Obama supporters look instead for parallels to 2004, when President George W. Bush ? seeking a second term amid a slow recovery ? successfully rallied a war-weary electorate by emphasizing his national-security credentials.

National defense is usually a GOP strength, but recent polls show Obama with an edge in this category over the former Massachusetts governor. Romney's response to the crisis, accusing Obama of apologizing for American values and appeasing Islamic extremists, has drawn criticism even from some prominent Republicans.

Romney's quick swing at Obama ? as the crisis was unfolding in the Middle East and North Africa ? was glaringly at odds with the more statesmanlike responses Wednesday from GOP leaders in Congress

On Thursday, Romney recalibrated his remarks and paid tribute to the four slain Americans in Libya, including U.S. Ambassador Christopher Stevens. "What a tragedy," he told a rally in Fairfax, Va.

But, in a pointed reference to the outbreak of violence at U.S. missions, Romney said, "sometimes it seems that we're at the mercy of events instead of shaping events."

"The world needs American leadership, the Middle East needs American leadership," Romney said.

Obama campaigned in Golden, Colo.

California man confirms role in anti-Islam film

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? The search for those behind the provocative, anti-Muslim film implicated in violent protests in Egypt and Libya led Wednesday to a California Coptic Christian convicted of financial crimes who acknowledged his role in managing and providing logistics for the production.

Nakoula Basseley Nakoula, 55, told The Associated Press in an interview outside Los Angeles that he helped with logistics for the filming of "Innocence of Muslims," which mocked Muslims and the prophet Muhammad and may have caused inflamed mobs that attacked U.S. missions in Egypt and Libya. He provided the first details about a shadowy production group behind the film.

Nakoula denied he directed the film and said he knew the self-described filmmaker, Sam Bacile. But the cell phone number that AP contacted Tuesday to reach the filmmaker who identified himself as Sam Bacile traced to the same address near Los Angeles where AP found Nakoula. Federal court papers said Nakoula's aliases included Nicola Bacily, Erwin Salameh and others.

Nakoula told the AP that he was a Coptic Christian and said the film's director supported the concerns of Christian Copts about their treatment by Muslims.

Nakoula denied he had posed as Bacile. During a conversation outside his home, he offered his driver's license to show his identity but kept his thumb over his middle name, Basseley. Records checks by the AP subsequently found it and other connections to the Bacile persona.

The AP located Bacile after obtaining his cell phone number from Morris Sadek, a conservative Coptic Christian in the U.S. who had promoted the anti-Muslim film in recent days on his website. Egypt's Christian Coptic population has long decried what they describe as a history of discrimination and occasional violence from the country's Arab majority.

Pastor Terry Jones of Gainesville, Fla., who burned Qurans on the ninth anniversary of 9/11, said he spoke with the movie's director on the phone Wednesday and prayed for him. He said he has not met the filmmaker in person, but the man contacted him a few weeks ago about promoting the movie.

"I have not met him. Sam Bacile, that is not his real name," Jones said. "I just talked to him on the phone. He is definitely in hiding and does not reveal his identity. He was quite honestly fairly shook up concerning the events and what is happening. A lot of people are not supporting him."

The film was implicated in protests that resulted in the burning of the U.S. consulate Tuesday in the eastern Libyan city of Benghazi.

Libyan officials said Wednesday that Ambassador Chris Stevens and three other embassy employees were killed during the mob violence, but U.S. officials now say they are investigating whether the assault was a planned terrorist strike linked to Tuesday's 11-year anniversary of the 9/11 terror attacks.

Nakoula, who talked guardedly about his role, pleaded no contest in 2010 to federal bank fraud charges in California and was ordered to pay more than $790,000 in restitution. He was also sentenced to 21 months in federal prison and ordered not to use computers or the Internet for five years without approval from his probation officer.

The YouTube account, "Sam Bacile," which was used to publish excerpts of the provocative movie in July, was used to post comments online as recently as Tuesday, including this defense of the film written in Arabic: "It is a 100 percent American movie, you cows."

Assistant U.S. Attorney Jennifer Leigh Williams said Nakoula set up fraudulent bank accounts using stolen identities and Social Security numbers, then checks from those accounts would be deposited into other bogus accounts from which Nakoula would withdraw money at ATM machines.

It was "basically a check-kiting scheme," the prosecutor told the AP. "You try to get the money out of the bank before the bank realizes they are drawn from a fraudulent account. There basically is no money."

The actors in the film issued a joint statement Wednesday saying they were misled about the project and said some of their dialogue was crudely dubbed during post-production.

In the English language version of the trailer, direct references to Muhammad appear to be the result of post-production changes to the movie. Either actors aren't seen when the name "Muhammad" is spoken in the overdubbed sound, or they appear to be mouthing something else as the name of the prophet is spoken.

"The entire cast and crew are extremely upset and feel taken advantage of by the producer," said the statement, obtained by the Los Angeles Times. "We are 100 percent not behind this film and were grossly misled about its intent and purpose. We are shocked by the drastic rewrites of the script and lies that were told to all involved. We are deeply saddened by the tragedies that have occurred."

The person who identified himself as Bacile and described himself as the film's writer and director told the AP on Tuesday that he had gone into hiding. But doubts rose about the man's identity amid a flurry of false claims about his background and role in the purported film.

Bacile told the AP he was an Israeli-born, 56-year-old, Jewish writer and director. But a Christian activist involved in the film project, Steve Klein, told AP on Wednesday that Bacile was a pseudonym and that he was Christian.

Klein had told the AP on Tuesday that the filmmaker was an Israeli Jew who was concerned for family members who live in Egypt.

Officials in Israel said there was no record of Bacile as an Israeli citizen.

When the AP initially left a message for Bacile, Klein contacted the AP from another number to confirm the interview request was legitimate then Bacile called back from his own cell phone.

Klein said he didn't know the real name of the man he called "Sam," who came to him for advice on First Amendment issues.

About 15 key players from the Middle East ? from Syria, Iraq, Turkey, Pakistan, Iran and a couple Coptic Christians from Egypt ? worked on the film, Klein said.

"Most of them won't tell me their real names because they're terrified," Klein said. "He was really scared and now he's so nervous. He's turned off his phone."

The Southern Poverty Law Center, which monitors hate groups, said Klein is a former Marine and longtime religious-right activist who has helped train paramilitary militias at a California church. It described Klein as founder of Courageous Christians United, which conducts protests outside abortion clinics, Mormon temples and mosques.

It quoted Klein as saying he believes that California is riddled with Muslim Brotherhood sleeper cells "who are awaiting the trigger date and will begin randomly killing as many of us as they can."

In his brief interview with the AP, Bacile defiantly called Islam a cancer and said he intended the film to be a provocative political statement condemning the religion.

But several key facts Bacile provided proved false or questionable. Bacile told AP he was 56 but identified himself on his YouTube profile as 74. Bacile said he is a real estate developer, but Bacile does not appear in searches of California state licenses, including the Department of Real Estate.

Hollywood and California film industry groups and permit agencies said they had no records of the project under the name "Innocence of Muslims," but a Los Angeles film permit agency later found a record of a movie filmed in Los Angeles last year under the working title "Desert Warriors."

A man who answered a phone listed for the Vine Theater, a faded Hollywood movie house, confirmed that the film had run for a least a day, and possibly longer, several months ago, arranged by a customer known as "Sam."

Google Inc., which owns YouTube, pulled down the video Wednesday in Egypt, citing a legal complaint. It was still accessible in the U.S. and other countries.

Klein told the AP that he vowed to help make the movie but warned the filmmaker that "you're going to be the next Theo van Gogh." Van Gogh was a Dutch filmmaker killed by a Muslim extremist in 2004 after making a film that was perceived as insulting to Islam.

"We went into this knowing this was probably going to happen," Klein said.

U.S. Cairo, Libya missions attacked, U.S. official reported dead

CAIRO/BENGHAZI, Libya (Reuters) - Protesters in Egypt and Libya attacked U.S. diplomatic missions on Tuesday, leading to the death of an American staffer at the consulate in the Libyan city of Benghazi after fierce clashes at the compound, a Libyan official said.

"One American staff member has died and a number have been injured in the clashes," Abdel-Monem Al-Hurr, spokesman for Libya's Supreme Security Committee, said, adding he did not know the exact number of injured or what the cause of death was.

The violence in Benghazi followed protests in neighboring Egypt where protesters scaled the walls of the Cairo embassy and tore down the American flag and burned it during protests over what demonstrators said was a U.S. film that insulted the Prophet Mohammad.

On Tuesday, Egypt's prestigious Al-Azhar mosque and seat of Sunni learning condemned a symbolic "trial" of the Prophet organized by a U.S. group including Terry Jones, a Christian pastor who triggered riots in Afghanistan in 2010 by threatening to burn the Koran.

Jones said that on Tuesday's anniversary of the September 11, 2001, attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, he had released a video promoting a film that portrayed the Prophet in a "satirical" manner. Many Muslims consider any depiction of the Prophet offensive.

Gunmen in Benghazi attacked the compound on Tuesday evening, clashing with Libyan security forces, officials said. "There is a connection between this attack and the protests that have been happening in Cairo," Hurr said.

The U.S. State Department did not refer to any deaths, but said in a statement: "We can confirm that our office in Benghazi, Libya, has been attacked by a group of militants. We are working with the Libyans now to secure the compound. We condemn in strongest terms this attack on our diplomatic mission."

Among about 2,000 protesters gathered in the Egyptian capital was Ismail Mahmoud, who, like others, did not name the film that angered him, but called on President Mohamed Mursi, Egypt's first civilian president and an Islamist, to take action.

"This movie must be banned immediately and an apology should be made," said the 19-year-old Mahmoud, a member of the "ultras" soccer supporters who played a big role in the uprising that brought down Hosni Mubarak last year.

Once the U.S. flag was hauled down in Cairo, some protesters tore it up and displayed bits to television cameras. Others burned the remnants outside the fortress-like embassy building in central Cairo. But some protesters objected to the flag burning.

BENGHAZI CLASHES

In Benghazi, Reuters reporters on the scene could see looters raiding the empty U.S. consulate's compound, walking off with desks, chairs and washing machines.

Unknown gunmen were shooting at the buildings, while others threw handmade bombs into the compound, setting off small explosions. Small fires were burning around the compound.

Passersby entered the unsecured compound to take pictures with their mobile phones and watch the looting.

No security forces could be seen around the consulate and a previous blockade of the road leading to it had been dismantled.

"The Libyan security forces came under heavy fire and we were not prepared for the intensity of the attack," Hurr said.

In Washington, a U.S. official who spoke on condition of anonymity said, "We have no reason to believe, at this time, that the Cairo protests and the attack in Benghazi are connected in motive."

Libya's interim government has struggled to impose its authority on a myriad of armed groups that have refused to lay down their weapons and often take the law into their own hands.

A number of security violations have rocked Benghazi, Libya's second biggest city and the cradle of last year's revolt that toppled Muammar Gaddafi.

The breaching of the U.S. Embassy walls in Cairo comes at a delicate time in U.S.-Egyptian relations, and as the United States appeared to be easing its caution over Mursi.

Last week, U.S. officials said they were close to a deal with Egypt's government for $1 billion in debt relief. Washington had also signaled its backing for a badly needed $4.8 billion loan that Egypt is seeking from the International Monetary Fund.

"I would urge you not to draw too many conclusions because we've also had some very positive developments in our relationship with Egypt," State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said.

"One of the things about the new Egypt is that protest is possible," she said. "Obviously we all want to see peaceful protest, which is not what happened outside the U.S. mission, so we're trying to restore calm now."

Washington has a large mission in Egypt, partly because of a huge aid program that followed Egypt's signing of a peace treaty with Israel in 1979. The United States gives $1.3 billion to Egypt's military each year and offers the nation other aid.

Following the protest, Egypt's Foreign Ministry said it was committed to giving all embassies the protection they needed.

Bones found in hunt for King Richard III's remains

Richard-digLONDON -- Is now the summer of his disinterment?

Archaeologists digging in central England for the remains of Richard III, the king immortalized as a murderous tyrant by William Shakespeare, have found bones that in many ways match his profile ?- literally.

The University of Leicester, which is spearheading the search, said Wednesday its team of archaeologists had unearthed the skeleton of an adult male bearing signs of possible battle wounds and of a severe curvature of the spine that would have made one of the man?s shoulders appear much higher than the other.

Richard was the last English monarch to die in battle, in 1485, at Bosworth Field against his successor, Henry VII. Described as ?deform?d? by Shakespeare, he was buried without pomp in a medieval friary in Leicester.

Working over the last three weeks in a small downtown parking lot, archaeologists discovered the ruins of what appears to have been the friary, with the bones in a spot at the east end of the church, where scholars believe Richard was entombed.

Richard Taylor, a spokesman for the university, said the skeleton bore evidence of major trauma.
?A bladed implement appears to have cleaved part of the rear of the skull,? Taylor said. ?A barbed metal arrowhead was found between the vertebrae of the skeleton?s upper back.?

The spine showed signs of ?severe scoliosis,? causing the person?s right shoulder to look higher than the left, an abnormality ?consistent with contemporary accounts of Richard?s appearance,? Taylor said. It would not, however, have made him a hunchback, as many actors have portrayed the character in Shakespeare?s famous tragedy.

The bones have been sent to a lab for DNA analysis, to be compared against a sample from a man believed to be a present-day descendant of one of Richard?s sisters.

Hi! Um, I'm new.

Hey Shifter13!

Welcome to RoleplayGateway! I hope you enjoy your time here and if you have any questions, feel free to ask. The community is very helpful and usually if they don't know the answer to your question, they will point you to someone else that might be able to help!

I am going to give you some links that may help you out on the site. The RPG User Manual will give you some basic info on the site and how to use it and the Rules are short, sweet and to the point.

Once you get familiarized with the place, I'd suggest going to either the Interest Checks thread or the Roleplayers Wanted thread. Interest checks are for people looking to gather people for a roleplay that's in its planning stages and Roleplayers Wanted is a thread looking for people to join a RP that has already been created but simply needs more people!

National debt hits $16T; GOP critical

(AP) ? The Treasury Department said Tuesday that the national debt has topped $16 trillion, the result of chronic government deficits that have poured more than $50,000 worth of red ink onto federal ledgers for every man, woman and child in the United States.

The news was greeted with a round of press releases from Barack Obama's GOP rivals, who used the grim-but-expected news to criticize the president for the government's fiscal performance over his 3 1/2 years in office. Obama has presided over four straight years of trillion dollar-plus deficits after inheriting a weak economy from his predecessor, George W. Bush.

"We can no longer push off the tough decisions until tomorrow," said No. 2 House Republican Eric Cantor, R-Va. "It's time to address the serious fiscal challenges we face and stop spending money we don't have." Last summer, Cantor dropped out of a set of budget talks hosted by Vice President Joe Biden, citing the insistence of the White House on tax increases to help close deficits that require the government to borrow 33 cents of every dollar it spends.

The spiraling debt means that lawmakers and the eventual winner of the White House in November will have to pass a law early next year to raise the government's borrowing cap from the current ceiling of $16.39 trillion. Passing such legislation last year proved enormously difficult and the nation's credit rating suffered.

First, however, lawmakers will try during a post-election lame duck session to renew Bush-era tax cuts and head off a round of forced budget austerity as automatic budget cuts are scheduled in January to slam both the Pentagon and domestic programs. Those cuts were required by another failed set of budget talks last fall by a bipartisan "supercommittee."

Sen. Rob Portman, R-Ohio, said: "This debt will not only be a liability for our kids and grandkids, but economists also tell us that it will limit economic growth and kill millions of jobs now and in the future." Portman was a member of last year's failed supercommittee, which deadlocked over taxes and cuts to popular benefit programs.

The debt topped the $16 trillion mark on Friday.

Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner has said the government will likely reach its debt limit at the end of the year. However, Geithner has said he will be able to employ various "extraordinary measures" to keep the government operating until sometime early next year. Geithner would need to use these measures if Congress, as expected, fails to tackle the debt limit by year's end.

Last year's prolonged impasse between the GOP-dominated House and Democrats controlling the Senate and the White House contributed to a move by the ratings agency Standard & Poor's to lower America's AAA bond rating for the first time in the country's history, nudging it down a notch to AA+ for long-term securities.

GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney promises sharp spending cuts and a balanced budget by 2020 if he wins the White House, but has provided little detail about how that might be accomplished.

For his part, Obama has declined to tackle the spiraling growth of benefit programs like Medicare and the Medicaid health program for the poor and disabled. His proposals to hike taxes on upper income earners have been repeatedly rejected by Republicans, but he promises to insist on them if he wins re-election.
