Reuters: RIM could open up BlackBerry network to others, join up with Ballmer

The Q1 earnings news from RIM of layoffs and a delay in its next generation of handsets has unsurprisingly led to some rumors from the usual "people familiar with the situation," according to Reuters. The options reportedly being considered by the board probably also won't shock you, like the possibility of following former co-CEO Jim Balsillie's plan to open up its network to others and / or or sell it outright. An alternative path comes from Microsoft and Steve Ballmer, who has reportedly been putting a full court press on the folks in Waterloo to pull a Nokia and bring their arms to the Windows OS camp. That choice is reportedly less attractive because it would mean giving up technology independence, but we'll see how long that feeling lasts if future earnings projections remain similarly dismal.

HTC EVO V 4G (Virgin Mobile)

Virgin Mobile's first phone to run on Sprint's 4G WiMAX network, the HTC EVO V 4G is an excellent deal for Virgin Mobile customers. Though a bit expensive, at $299.99 up front, it gets you fast 4G WiMAX speeds, powerful dual-core performance, and glasses-free 3D, all for as little as $35 a month. Sure, the phone?is on the bulky side, and narrow viewing angles mean that only one person can view 3D content at a time, but it's the fastest, most powerful phone available on Virgin Mobile, which earns it our Editors' Choice award.

Physical Design and Call Quality
The HTC EVO V 4G is basically the same phone as the HTC EVO 3D?(3 stars)?we reviewed on Sprint last year. At 5.0 by 2.5 by .45 inches (HWD) and 5.9 ounces, this phone is pretty huge.?The back panel is made of rubberized, textured black plastic that feels comfortable to hold. Dual 5-megapixel cameras are in place on the back of the phone for recording 3D content, and camera and volume controls are located on the right side of the phone. It feels a little crowded, and the camera buttons are easy to press accidentally, but you get used to it.

The EVO V has a 4.3-inch 960-by-540 qHD LCD display, which looks sharp, bright, and clear. It's by far the nicest screen you can get on a phone from Virgin right now, and typing feels fine on the phone's onscreen keyboard. Below the display are four capacitive touch buttons.

While we had some trouble with call quality and internet with the EVO 3D, that seems to have been remedied here, as the EVO V turned in much better call quality, reception, and Internet connectivity. The EVO V is a quad-band (800/850/1900/2600) CDMA/WiMAX phone that runs on Sprint's 3G and 4G networks.

Reception and calls are about average. Voices sounds loud and clear in the phone's earpiece, if somewhat thin and digitized. Calls made with the phone sound a bit muffled, and noise cancellation is mediocre. Voices sound fine over a Jawbone Era?Bluetooth headset ($129, 4.5 stars) and voice dialing worked over Bluetooth without issue. The speakerphone sounds fine but is far too low to use outside. Battery life over 3G is average, at 5 hours and 41 minutes of talk time. But turn on 4G, and that number drops considerably, even when you aren't using the phone. You'll probably only want to connect to 4G when you know you're going to use it. 3D recording eats into that battery number significantly as well, so you may want to carry a spare.

Data Speeds and Data Plans
As we discovered in our testing for the Fastest Mobile Networks, Sprint has the slowest 3G speeds of all the carriers we tested. That means that all 3G-only Sprint, Virgin, and Boost phones are running at some pretty challenged data speeds. Thankfully, 4G WiMAX support offers the EVO V a major boost. Running Ookla's Speedtest.net app, I saw average 4G download speeds of 4Mbps in Manhattan. Uploads were a lot slower, at an average of 0.6Mbps. But speeds in Queens were great, at an average of 8Mbps down and 1.3Mbps up.

Sprint's 3G network, on the other hand, is significantly slower. I saw an average of 1.1Mbps down and .8Mbps up in Queens, but not even half that in Manhattan. Additionally, while I didn't have trouble connecting to Sprint's 4G network, there was one instance in Manhattan in which it was crawling along. This issue didn't repeat itself, though.

The best reason to get a phone on Virgin is to tap into the carrier's inexpensive pricing plans. You can get "unlimited" texts and data for just $35 per month with 300 voice minutes. The 1,200 minute plan costs $45, and unlimited voice calling brings the price to $55 per month. If you don't do much talking, that $35 plan is hard to beat?especially considering that a data plan alone will cost you $30 on a carrier like Verizon Wireless, and for that price you're limited to 2GB of data per month. There is a downside for heavy data users: After 2.5GB of full-speed data usage per month, your speeds will be throttled significantly until the end of your billing cycle.

For an additional $15 per month, you can use the EVO V as a mobile hotspot to share your connection with up to eight devices. This also gets an additional 1GB of full-speed data added to your plan.

Google+ has 250 million users

Google wasn't going to leave its budding social layer (don't call it a network) out of today's IO fun. It gave itself a bit of a pat on the back for (probably) exceeding people's expectations. For all the jokes that have been made (some of them on this very site) at Google+'s expense, it's racked up more than 250 million users. Sure, only 150 milllion actually active, but simply getting people signed up is a victory in itself. And, hey, about 50 percent of them sign on every day. More interestingly, Vic Gundotra says that more users are signing in with the mobile app than visiting the desktop site. That's great news to go along with the dedicated tablet version that was also announced.

Check out our full coverage of Google I/O 2012's opening keynote at our event hub!

Boo Boo's Jennifer Cawthorn on Moshi ... - Natural Baby Shower

?

?

Our Life in A Day series takes you on a a guided tour around the lives of our lovely suppliers: How they juggle family and business? What inspires them? Tips, truths, confessions and more. In our third post, we?re introducing Jennifer Cawthorn, co-founder of the highly successful natural skin-care brand Boo Boo:

?Being my own boss is great ? Corinna, my business partner and I launched Boo Boo because we couldn?t find any natural, effective, UK-made products to use on our babies. We were both on maternity leave at the time from our jobs as magazine editors. We decide to launch a Mummy and Baby range that looked as gorgeous as it was to use, that was natural and made in the UK. That was five years ago, now we?re stocked in John Lewis, Harrods, Selfridges and of course, brilliant independent stockists such as Natural Baby Shower.

Here?s a typical day:

?

7.00AM

I have my own 8-year old alarm clock in the shape of my son, Thomas, who wakes up around 6am every morning although he has strict instructions not to wake me before 7! My husband, Paul is usually leaving for work at this time and Maisy, my 7-year-old daughter is just waking up. We all shower (with Boo Boo Top to Toe wash of course!), dress and go downstairs for breakfast. The kids are big fans of a four-course breakfast ? usually starting with cereal or omelette and finishing with a variation of cheese, fruit and yoghurt or anything else they can find in the fridge. I make do with a cup of tea and a glass of juice to start with but I put a bowl of frozen raspberries next to the Aga to defrost ready for when I get back from school.

?

8.00AM

Now the children are older, they?re pretty up to speed with the morning routine although, there?s always a bit of chivving along to be done though and I find myself standing at the foot of the stairs shouting things like ?brush your teeth Thomas! Find your reading book Maisy! Have you been to the toilet?? I think I?ll find it hard to stop doing that ? even when they?re teenagers!

?

8.40AM

When we moved from London to Wakefield five years ago, my number one house-choosing rule was that we needed to live within walking distance to school! The walk wakes us all up and we?ll have a chat about who?s fallen out with who at school and what is the toy-of-the-moment: Moshi Monsters (Maisy), Lego (Thomas).

?

9.00AM

Fortunately the kids give me a kiss and now run happily into school ? for the first two years that they were both at school either one of them seemed to be clinging on to me and crying for me not to leave. I used to look at other kids skipping happily in and wonder what I was doing wrong! My husband jokes that I?m so soft with them, why would they want to go to school! But we?ve all grown-out of it thankfully.

?

9.20AM

Once home, I have my raspberries with yoghurt, pecans and honey and make a second cup of tea. Then I switch on Radio 2 (it?s my companion as I work alone at home!)? and settle down at my desk to start going through emails ? I usually get distracted by reading the gossip websites for any celebrity baby news I can pop on our Facebook site. I?m really lucky to work from home, it feels very relaxed, although it can feel lonely when there?s no office banter. Fortunately, I have a lovely friend, Nicola who comes in a couple of hours a day to help out with orders etc. and I?m always on the phone to stockists and suppliers who I have a good rapport with.

?

10AM

Once I?ve dealt with emails, I?ll open up our To Do list ? because Corinna, my business partner and I live 200 miles apart, we rely on technology to ensure we are working well together ? as well as numerous phone calls, we use Dropbox on our computers where we share all our files. Our To Do list grows by the day but without it I?d definitely stray off course. I?ll spend most of the morning sorting out shop orders, speaking to stockists and web customers and generally making sure everyone?s happy.

?

12AM

I?m always ready for lunch, working alone, I need little markers during the day as an excuse to get up and stretch my legs. Lunch is usually whatever?s floating around in the fridge ? a cheese and tomato sandwich, leftovers ? nothing very exciting. If it?s a nice day I?ll eat it in the garden and 20 minutes away from my screen. Paul will usually phone from work so we?ll have a ten minute chat about our day so far.

?

1PM to 3pm

The time flies by in the afternoon! I only have limited uninterrupted time because I leave my? desk at 3pm to pick the kids up from school. Suddenly, I?m aware of the clock ticking and all the things I need to get done! I may have a blog to write, phone calls to make or label words for one of our new products so I try and keep my eyes off my emails and get my head down ? emails make it easy to get distracted! At the moment, Corinna and I are working on some exciting new products, as well as getting the formulas perfect we can spend hours and hours making sure the packaging is beautiful ? fortunately, we have very similar tastes so we usually agree.

?

3pm to 6pm

A dash out of the door to get the kids. Once home ?it?s snack time, homework and, more often than not, either Brownies, swimming or numerous friends home for tea. While the kids are playing, I?ll keep checking emails and answering calls ? the problem with having a home business is that I can?t just switch it on and off to fit in with my routine. If a customer calls while I?m getting fish fingers out from under the grill then I just have to sound as professional as possible. Usually, our customers, especially women, totally understand when there?s a bit of multi-tasking going on in the background!

?

6PM to 8PM

Paul gets home from work and the kids jump all over him and he takes on the role of entertainer (which he?s very good at) I?ll put some dinner on (something easy like pasta or shepherds pie) and we?ll sit down and talk about our day. Then it might be a family game of Scrabble, Paul may play Super Mario on the X box with Thomas while me and Maisy do some colouring-in or, if it?s a nice evening, we?ll sit outside with a cup of tea while, the kids will play on the trampoline or on their rollerskates and skateboards.

?

8.30PM

I?m quite strict about bedtime for the children on a school night ? it?s lights out at 8.30pm. Once they?re tucked up, Corinna and I will have our evening phone call. Our business has always worked around our families ? for the last three years we?ve spoken at 8.30pm once the kids have gone to bed? ? Corinna has a boy and a girl the same age too. We?ll plan the next day?s tasks, ?perhaps look at designs of labels on our screens together and talk about orders etc. but it?s always interspersed with lots of chit chat too ? we were friends for 14 years before we launched the business so we always want to know what?s going on in each other?s lives.

?

9.30PM

After work, Paul and I will usually flop on the sofa and watch some telly! I have a addiction to reality TV ? Gypsy Weddings, The Voice, One Born Every Minute ? I love it all. I always stay up later than I should but usually head off for my nightly bath with Boo Boo Splendidly Soothing Bath Soak at about 10.30PM and try and be in bed for 11PM. Paul has to be up earlier than me so he?s usually pestering me to switch the light off ? I have a little light on my Kindle so I usually curl up with that on- much easier than a torch under the duvet!?

?

Thanks so much for sharing this with us Jennifer, good luck with everything :)

Beach pollution at third-highest level in 22 years

Beaches across the nation continue to be fouled by sewage and storm water pollution that puts swimmers at risk of getting sick, according to a report by an environmental group.

The Natural Resources Defense Council found that although the number of days American beaches were closed or posted with advisories because of contaminated water dropped 3% last year, they were at their third-highest level in 22 years.

California registered a slight increase in beach closures and advisories in 2011, most of them in response to tests revealing elevated bacteria counts, according to the group's annual "Testing the Waters" report.

"We have an ongoing legacy of pollution at our beaches, and the problem is not going away," said Noah Garrison, an attorney with the environmental group's national water program. "We need to be doing more to solve the problem."

The top source of contamination is runoff swept into the ocean by rainfall or irrigation, accounting for about 47% of the beach pollution last year. Beaches along the Gulf of Mexico continued to be hit with closures and advisories related to the 2010 BP oil spill.

The report analyzed bacterial test results and public advisories from more than 3,000 beaches in 30 coastal and Great Lakes states. A high bacteria count indicates beach water is likely to harbor pathogens that can sicken swimmers ? causing skin rashes, stomach and respiratory illnesses, and other infections. Interactive maps in the report allow readers to search by ZIP Code to find out how their favorite beach measures up.

The states with the cleanest beaches in 2011 were Delaware, New Hampshire, North Carolina, New Jersey and Florida. The most contaminated were Louisiana, Ohio and Illinois.

California, which accounted for 25% of the nation's beach closures and advisories, ranked 21st out of the 30 states in the number of beach water tests that flunked federal health standards.

Two Southern California beaches made the report's list of 15 "repeat offenders" because of their persistent pollution problems: Avalon Beach on Catalina Island and Doheny State Beach in Dana Point. Three earned a spot on the nation's one dozen "5 star" beaches with outstanding water quality: Newport Beach, Bolsa Chica State Beach and Huntington State Beach.

The report calls on the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to strengthen a new set of beach water quality standards it is set to finalize this fall. Environmental groups have criticized some of its provisions as weaker at protecting swimmers from contaminated water than the 1986 rules they replace.

To curb beach pollution in the long term, the report says, coastal states must address the root cause and build more "green infrastructure" to absorb polluted runoff. Projects could include rain-capturing barrels, porous pavement that allows water to filter into the ground, and facilities that divert and treat runoff before it reaches the ocean.

Arizona wins national title with 4-1 win over SC

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) ? Arizona coach Andy Lopez thought he had the makings of a national championship team four years ago.

Better late than never.

Arizona ended South Carolina's two-year run of dominance at the College World Series with a 4-1 victory on Monday night, delivering the long-awaited national title to the coach who took over Arizona's downtrodden program 11 years ago.

Brandon Dixon's tie-breaking double started a three-run ninth inning for Arizona, and the Wildcats (48-17) won their first title since 1986.

Lopez figured it would come in 2008, when a team that started the season ranked No. 1 lost in the super regionals at Miami. Lopez still talks of the disappointment of that season.

The hurt only got worse when his 2009 squad failed to make the national tournament. The last two years ended in regionals.

"Coach Lopez means the world to us, and we're so happy we brought joy back to his life in coaching," CWS Most Outstanding Player Robert Refsnyder said. "This goes to out to coach Lopez and everyone involved in the program, and without (athletic director) Greg Byrne this wouldn't be possible."

James Farris and Mathew Troupe combined to limit the Gamecocks (49-20) to three hits as the Wildcats won their fourth title overall. The others came in 1976 and 1980.

Dixon, who entered the game as a defensive replacement in the sixth inning, sent a grounder down the third-base line past LB Dantzler's outstretched glove for his first hit of the CWS.

"When I saw him hit that ball, I knew it was fair," Refsnyder said.

Tyler Webb relieved Matt Price (5-5), and Trent Gilbert drove in his second and third runs of the game with a two-out single that broke open the game.

"I was just trying to get a hit, because I knew they would be big insurance runs," Gilbert said.

South Carolina had been trying to become the first team since the Southern California dynasty of the early 1970s to win three national titles in a row.

"We battled as hard as we could, but they did a little bit better than we did," Gamecocks Ray Tanner said. "Though we're disappointed tonight, I'm not disappointed in my players. We battled awful hard. We made a run, got to the postseason and got back out here. We got in the losers' bracket and got back to the finals."

Lopez, who won a national championship at Pepperdine in 1992, became the second coach to win a Division I baseball title at two schools. Augie Garrido was the first, winning three at Cal State Fullerton and two at Texas.

Lopez took over a program that had gone to the NCAA regionals just once in the previous eight years. He came within that one win of getting to the CWS in 2008, then took a step backward in 2009 when the Wildcats didn't make the national tournament.

The 2010 and 2011 seasons ended in regionals. The Wildcats won 18 of their last 20 games this season, including their last 11.

Down three runs in the bottom of the ninth, South Carolina loaded the bases against Troupe (6-1) on two walks and a single.

With one out, Tanner English sent a line drive up the middle that second baseman Trent Gilbert gloved. Gilbert rushed to the bag to double off Dantzler, but Dantzler got back just in time.

Grayson Greiner then flied out to right fielder Refsnyder on a 2-1 pitch, sparking a rush of Arizona players to the middle of the field for the celebratory pile-on.

"We were extremely fortunate to get away with this victory," Lopez said.

Dixon, batting .242 for the season, had been 0 for 7 with three strikeouts in his previous CWS at-bats. As usual, he replaced first baseman Joseph Maggi in the middle innings and got his opportunity in the ninth after Refsnyder singled leading off the ninth.

Farris and Michael Roth engaged in a pitcher's duel through the first seven innings.

Arizona scored in the third after Maggi doubled leading off, moved to third on Riley Moore's sacrifice and scored on Gilbert's groundout.

It looked as if the one run just might stand for Farris and the Wildcats.

The Gamecocks had only two baserunners through six innings: Christian Walker walked in the first and Dantzler singled in the fourth.

Farris walked Walker again to start the seventh, though, and Walker went to third on Adam Matthews' single to right. Walker scored the tying run on Kyle Martin's grounder back to Farris.

Arizona had runners at first and third with two outs in the eighth when Dantzler short-armed a throw into the dirt after picking up Johnny Field's two-out grounder. Price escaped, getting Alex Mejia to fly out to center on his next pitch.

South Carolina took its turn threatening in the bottom half. Greiner was hit with a pitch, and Chase Vergason tried to move him to second with a sacrifice. But third baseman Seth Mejias-Brean picked up the ball and made a tough throw to second to get the lead runner.

Vergason ended up on third when he stole second as Evan Marzilli swung at strike three, with Moore's throw sailing into center field. It was the first steal against the Wildcats in the CWS.

Lopez, who had expressed doubts about his bullpen all week, called on Troupe to relieve Farris. The freshman right-hander got ahead 0-2 on Joey Pankake, then ran the count full before catching the freshman looking at strike three.

Troupe pumped his right fist, adjusted his glasses and then trotted to his dugout after the biggest strikeout of his career.

For the second straight night Arizona shut down a South Carolina team that struggled offensively after beating Florida 7-3 in its CWS opener.

Konner Wade limited the Gamecocks to six hits in a complete-game, 5-1 victory in Game 1 on Sunday.

South Carolina entered Game 2 with a .197 batting average (30 for 152) over its previous five games, a stretch in which it scored just 11 runs.

District Farm Family Winners Named - Talk Business

The Arkansas Farm Bureau named its district winners for Farm Family of the Year.

The program begins each year with selection of top farm families in each county and culminates in December with selection of the state Farm Family of the Year.

Sony working on AR specs to rival Google's Project Glass

Sony is planning a rival to Google's Project Glass AR specs, which would allow pairs of users to share information by looking into each other's eyes.

A recently-filed patent showcases tech that acts like the various 'bump' apps that allow folks to share contact details by placing their phones together.

In this reality, instead of asking for a girl's phone number, you'd go up and stare into her AR bespectacled eyes until she hands over the digits. That's if the police don't show up first.

Light Emitter

Sony's Optical Communication Display Glasses, as they're coined, also possess "A Light Emitter that could communicate with other optical communication display(s), like a specialised wrist watch."

The glasses could also communicate with a mobile phone, PDA or games machine, meaning they could be used for work or play.

Aside from that feature, Sony's offering looks to be much like Google's.

Naturally there's a camera on board, which would pick up QR codes and the like. There's also, like Google's Project Glass, a microphone and speakers built into the headset.

We expect to hear more about Project Glass at Google's I/O conference next week, following several recent public appearances.

Last weekend we reported on a purported Xbox 720 leak which proposed connected Kinect Glasses, so it seems the digital specs revolution is shaping up to be one of the biggest tech stories of 2013.

What's the Difference Between Pay Per Click Advertising and Search

?

If you?re looking to drive more traffic to your website, then you?ve probably heard of the terms ?pay per click advertising? and ?search engine optimization? or ?SEO.? But what?s the difference? And how does pay per click advertising (or PPC advertising) differ from search engine marketing or paid search?

Well, search engine marketing and paid search are really just euphemisms for pay per click advertising, which is also known as PPC advertising, or Google advertising because the majority of pay per click advertising runs on the Google search network, Google content network, and Google display network.

When you hear ?pay per click advertising,? think advertising. The listings generated from pay per click advertising are paid for, and they appear in the ?sponsored links? sections at the very top and far right-hand side of search results pages. They can also appear on other websites that ?lease? space to Google and other search engines to display advertising.

The words ?pay per click? in the term pay per click advertising also tell us something. With pay per click advertising, the website owner pays a specific amount each time a user clicks on their ad. In other words, they pay per click, hence the name ?pay per click advertising.?

Pay per click advertising can be useful for advertisers who require highly-predictable marketing budgets. That?s because pay per click advertisers control precisely how much they?re willing to spend on their pay per click advertising. In fact, you can set a daily budget to ensure you never spend more than your company can afford.

Something else to consider about pay per click advertising is that each time an ad appears and a user doesn?t click on it, there?s no cost. Therefore, a pay per click advertising listing can appear thousands of times, be seen by thousands of internet users, and as long as no one clicks on it, the advertiser doesn?t have to pay.

Of course, the goal of pay per click advertising is for users to click on ads, but it?s helpful to know pay per click advertising can increase visibility even when users aren?t clicking. This is especially useful when pay per click advertisers use banner ads, which are graphically-designed display ads that serve to internet users based on their search behavior.

By comparison to pay per click advertising, search engine optimization (SEO) is not advertising at all. Unlike pay per click advertising, SEO relies on your website?s content, programming, and back-links to increase the likelihood your listing will appear among the top search results. But just because search engine optimization is not advertising, don?t think SEO is free. In fact, an SEO program can cost as much or more than pay per click advertising. That?s because effective SEO requires hiring an expert to modify your website?s content and coding. In addition, effective SEO programs require generating content and disseminating that content across the internet ? always with links back to your website. And all of this takes time and money.

On a more positive note, sophisticated internet users may be more likely to click on organic search results than on listings generated by pay per click adveritising. The organic search results are listed below pay per click advertising results, and some internet users perceive these listings as more credible than pay per click advertising results.

Bottom line, both pay per click advertising and SEO are valuable and both should be part of your online marketing program. So if you want to increase visibility and traffic, make sure to set an adequate budget for pay per click advertising and SEO.

Huffington Post On POLITICO - Business Insider

Huffington magazine/iPad screenshot

We just downloaded The Huffington Post's profile by Michael Calderone?of how Politico is supposedly in disarray. You can't read it online because it's only on the iPad. We picked out nine key points you need to know:
  • Executive editor and co-founder Jim VandeHei at its fifth anniversary celebration recently: "We get flak for being a cult sometimes. But you wanna know what? We are a cult!"
  • Co-founders VandeHei and John F. Harris (also editor in chief) played a video featuring birthday wishes from, among others, Presidents Barack Obama and George Bush.?
  • But... Some of the Politico staff thinks co-founders VandeHei and John F. Harris could be gone from the company a few years from now.?
  • Why? "In the middle of an election year, with political junkies frothing," Calderone writes, "Politico's traffic during the first five months of 2012 is down."?
  • Traffic is down from 4.229 million unique visitors in 2011 to 4.165 million so far this year.
  • Staffers are leaving in droves. "There have been so many departures lately that Politico editors have done away with the traditional going-away cake in the newsroom."
  • Politico's contracts are "notoriously hard to break." But Ben Smith, who was under contract through the election, "managed to join BuzzFeed late last year."
  • Most in the newsroom PANNED Allen and VandeHei's piece advancing the theme that the?Times and?Post were biased toward Barack Obama. One thought they were just trying to "pick a fight unnecessarily" with the papers.?
  • One former staffer compared the newsroom's atmosphere to?The Hunger Games.

Sales of pre-owned homes slide in May

Gregory Bull / AP

In this June 13, 2012, photo, a woman walks to an open house in San Diego.

By Bill Briggs

Sales of existing-homes fell 1.5 percent in May, according to a report Thursday by the National Association of Realtors, offering another realty reality check that the sweet sounds of any possible residential revival will contain sour notes.

Purchases of previously owned U.S. homes dipped to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 4.55 million in May from 4.62 million in April. But sales posted a 9.6 percent increase last month compared to the 4.15 million-unit pace in May 2011.

While most housing analysts expected a small May skid, some real estate experts are convinced a few key ingredients, including tighter supplies, are present for a national ? albeit slow ? residential resurgence.

?The slight pullback in monthly home sales is more likely due to supply constraints rather than softening demand.?The normal seasonal upturn in inventory did not occur this spring,? said Lawrence Yun, NAR chief economist. ?Even with the monthly decline, home sales have moved markedly higher with 11 consecutive months of gains over the same month a year earlier.?

One buzzword being bandied about lately among many Realtors with equal parts hope and hate: inventory ? and the lack thereof.

Nationally, total housing inventory at the end of May dropped 0.4 percent to 2.49 million existing homes available for sale, NAR reported. That represents a 6.6-month supply of available homes at the current sales pace. In April, there was a 6.5-month supply.?

Listed inventory is 20.4 percent lower than it was one year ago at this time when a 9.1-month supply existed.?Compare that to the peak of the market in July 2007 when unsold inventory hit a record of 4.04 million homes.

?Because new inventory is down year on year, that means there are fewer homes (for buyers) to choose from,? said Jed Kolko, the chief economist for Trulia. ?That can hold back sales. You can?t sell homes that aren?t on the market.?

According to a survey released last week by Realtor.com, inventory of for-sale, single-family homes, condos and townhouses in 144 of the 146 markets?surveyed dipped in May compared to the same month in 2011.

In Sacramento, existing inventory at the end of May was 1,413 single-family homes ? as compared to 4,111 homes the same month last year ? a 66 percent plunge, said Brian McMartin, a broker associate with Better Homes and Gardens Real Estate, Mason-McDuffie, in Sacramento.

That?s causing Sacramento agents and buyers to be frustrated because the demand to buy there is gaining energy.

"At that rate, we have less than a month of inventory left, assuming nothing else came on the market,? McMartin said. ?Sales here are up but not exponentially. We have an inventory issue.

?We have buyers frustrated, getting out-bid left and right, making 5, 10, 20 offers, having to overbid.?

The inventory shortage apparently is helping drive prices, however, Yun said. The median price for a home resale rose to $182,600 in May, according to NAR. That's 7.9 percent higher than the same month one year ago - and the highest since June 2010.

Cubs batter White Sox in Chicago battle

Associated Press Sports

updated 11:19 p.m. ET June 18, 2012

CHICAGO (AP) - Bryan LaHair knows a position change is imminent. He passed his first audition with flying colors.

LaHair and Alfonso Soriano homered to lead the Chicago Cubs to a 12-3 victory over the White Sox on Monday night in the opener of the crosstown, interleague series.

Making his first appearance of the season in right field, LaHair was tested early with a retreating catch to rob Gordon Beckham of extra bases in the first inning.

"I had a feeling I was going to get a ball early in the game, it always works that way," LaHair said. "I got a good read, got a good jump and took a good angle."

Manager Dale Sveum called the catch "as key as anything."

Highly touted first base prospect Anthony Rizzo is tearing up Pacific Coast League pitching and could be promoted soon, leaving the 29-year-old LaHair as the odd man out unless he lands in the outfield.

"After today, probably every day," Sveum said when asked how often LaHair will play the outfield. "Depending on what we do at first base, I think LaHair is going be out there quite a bit with (David) DeJesus in center field against right-handed pitching."

The big lefty also helped his cause by hitting his 13th homer of the season with one on and two outs in the third to put the Cubs up 2-0.

With winds gusting to 41 mph the Cubs had season highs of five home runs, 15 hits and 12 runs.

Starlin Castro and Luis Valbuena homered and had three hits apiece for the Cubs and Geovany Soto added a solo shot in his first game back from the 15-day disabled list.

Matt Garza (3-5) allowed home runs to Paul Konerko and A.J. Pierzynski, but limited the damage to three runs over six innings to earn the win.

Zach Stewart (1-2) was tagged for six runs and nine hits, including four homers, over 5 2-3 innings.

"You get two outs and then he just couldn't get that third out. They were swinging it," White Sox manager Robin Ventura said. "It was a night (the ball) was carrying, and they put it on the barrel a lot."

The Cubs exacted some revenge on the White Sox, who earned the sweep when the teams met at Wrigley Field May 18-20. The White Sox had won seven of the last eight matchups against the Cubs.

The Cubs scored 11 runs with four homers on Memorial Day against the San Diego Padres, and had 14 hits four times.

The White Sox have lost five of their last six and nine of 13 overall.

Castro added a two-run shot in the fifth, and Soriano hit a solo homer two batters later.

Soriano's 440-foot blast to straightaway center was his 13th of the year - all have come since May 15. He added an RBI single in the Cubs' six-run seventh.

His four homers and 10 RBIs are franchise records for a designated hitter.

"Not a lot of guys his age can do what he does," Garza said of Soriano. "There are very few, and the few that do, they're well respected."

Garza was referring to the rain of boos Soriano caught on the last homestand for not running out a dropped liner to third. The 36-year-old has been a lightning rod for criticism from Cubs fans in his tenure there.

"He cares so much about what he does and takes a lot of pride in his craft," Garza said. "He deserves a lot more respect from the fans than he's getting."

Stewart was roughed up in his first start of the season. Pitching in a long-relief role this season, he was called upon to give aces Chris Sale and Jake Peavy extra rest.

Stewart allowed nine hits and six runs over 5 2-3 innings. He was pulled in the sixth after allowing his fourth homer of the game to Soto, who had arthroscopic surgery to repair a torn meniscus in his left knee. He had been out since May 16.

Will Ohman gave up two runs in 2-3 of an inning of relief, and Nate Jones gave up four runs without retiring a batter in the seventh.

Valbuena's three-run shot capped the Cubs' big inning.

Pierzynski hit a solo homer in the fifth, his 12th of the season and Konerko hit his 13th, a two-run shot, in the sixth.

Garza gave up three runs and five hits over six innings. He struck out six and issued one walk.

Notes: The announced paid attendance was 33,215. . The Cubs placed RHP Ryan Dempster (right lat tightness) on the 15-day DL and recalled RHP Scott Maine from Triple-A Iowa. . C Welington Castillo was optioned to Iowa to accommodate Soto's roster spot. . The White Sox agreed to terms on a minor-league contract with first-round draft pick Courtney Hawkins. Hawkins, the 13th overall pick, will report to Advanced Rookie League Bristol. . Chicago Bulls Hall of Famer Scottie Pippen threw out the first pitch. . The Cubs will send Travis Wood (0-3, 4.58 ERA) to the hill on Tuesday against Peavy (6-2, 2.91).
