The Mitt Romney restoration: A vision of a past we can believe in (The Ticket)

Romney appearing Tuesday night in Davenport, IA. Jeff Haynes (Reuters)

DAVENPORT, Iowa--I'm told the reason it remains illegal to raise chickens in Iowa City, where I live, is because Iowans moved to our relatively cosmopolitan college town to get away from the country people and, by extension, their chickens. Twentysomethings from bigger cities, where it is fashionable to raise your own chicks and harvest fresh eggs and place them decorously on gingham dish towels, come to Iowa thinking they will live the country life for a little while, only to find their neighbors shutting them down. I mention this by way of explaining my first impression of the 400 people who came to see Mitt Romney in a hotel in Davenport, Iowa, on Tuesday night: These are the people who would call the police on your illegal chickens.

The women have accessorized. They're wearing foundation, bronzer, silk scarves, pearls. There are men in ties, men in Banana Republic sweaters, over-scrubbed little blond boys in blue fleece. It is a crowd in which it is possible to linger on a face that seems remotely recognizable and wonder if you're staring at a news anchor whose name you used to know.

"I am not an evangelical Christian, and you're not an evangelical Christian," one Romney supporter tells another, by way of explaining the endorsement of Rick Santorum by Bob Vander Plaats, Iowa's most politically charged evangelical Christian. We are seated under chandeliers and gilded molding in the nicest room, the "historic Gold Room," of the Hotel Blackhawk, a progressive-era hotel that calls itself Davenport's most luxurious. The evangelical Christians, who chose Huckabee over Romney four years ago, do not tend to meet under chandeliers. Their bases of operation have been, that election cycle and this one, many dozens of common rooms in many dozen franchises of a chain restaurant called Pizza Ranch. Michelle Bachmann, another evangelical favorite, stopped at three of those on Wednesday.

The room is packed to capacity 45 minutes before Romney arrives. Among the hundreds of politely seated voters, one man is vigorously waving a large red foam "Mitt Romney '08" novelty baseball mitt.

"Oh, the mitts," a woman says. "We've got two in the closet. Didn't even think to bring 'em."

"It says '08 but so what," says the mitt-waver.

"Well, my shirt says '07!"

"I've got a 4-by-8 Romney sign up in my yard left over from '08."

"So put it up."

"It is up!"

"Remind me to go through that closet," the woman says to her husband. "I don't even know what else is up there?a fan?"

Romney supporters are packed along the aisles and spilling into the hallway, while hotel staff pass chairs over their heads. "They misunderestimated the number of chairs," someone says, and then, to friends in the aisle, "You should have come earlier, you would have gotten a seat!" Romney is late, which a woman notes George W. Bush would not have been; the former president was, apparently, always 15 minutes early. There are many such comments from serial meet-and-greeters, dropped knowledge about how such events usually proceed.

"I don't know why they don't open this room up," someone says, as the aisles grow so packed they begin to press against the seated guests, "that wall opens."

The mitt-waver begins to chant "We want Mitt," which does not catch on but provokes some indulgent giggles.

When Mitt finally arrives, he gives a polished speech about the difference between "opportunity America" and "entitlement America." He talks about reading from a prepared text, but barely glances at the pages in front of him while delivering perfect paragraphs of talking-point-studded prose: Free enterprise. Constitution. Low taxes. Social issues never come up, which is perhaps why Mitt never looks uncomfortable, never struggles to find a natural cadence, never emphasizes the wrong word in a practiced string of them. The biggest applause goes to his promise to "restore" the country rather than "transform" it. And though, in retrospect, it seems that the former would necessarily imply the latter, the enthusiasm with which this sentiment is received is interesting. This is a promise to avoid change. Romney is here to battle the forces of transformation, which implies not only Barack Obama but also his less dependably boring Republican opponents, who are louder, and better at chanting.

Ron Paul supporters, their average age about half that of the people in this room, are standing outside the hotel in a cold breeze coming off the Mississippi. They'd been shouting Ron Paul's name for a while when the Romney bus showed up, and which point they shouted even louder.

In the historic Gold Room, the talk of Paul is not flattering. "He wants to legalize prostitution!" I hear a scandalized adolescent girl tell her friends.

"He shot himself in the foot with those newsletters, there's no way now," says an older woman, who then loudly bemoans the lack of diversity in the room.

Iowa's unemployment rate is 6 percent. Corn prices are so high that families are selling their farms for prices that would have been unthinkable five years ago. And Davenport, a city that endures in the popular imagination as the gritty shuttered river town it may have been in the '80s, has, with its riverside skywalk and art museum and riverboat casino blasting "Monster Mash" a hundred yards down the Mississippi, lost whatever depressed industrial chic it once had. There is no apocalypse here. The candidate the state wants may not be the one into moon-mining, or the one a little too obsessed with the fact that Iowa has legalized gay marriage, or the one who wants to eliminate five federal departments.

All down the hallway that looks over the hotel lobby, the voters who couldn't stuff into the room are hoping for a glimpse of Romney. There are murmurs that he has arrived, and then all at once everyone is up and applauding. From the middle of the room, Romney is impossible to see. It's all backs, polite applause, and gilded molding. In the '80s, when maintenance of the hotel seemed pointlessly expensive, one of a long succession of owners hid the arches and skylights under a drop-down ceiling. But the ballroom is restored to its 1915 condition now, a symbol, according to the hotel, "of prosperity of the quad cities." The point is no longer to improve it, or reimagine it, but to keep the place from falling back into decay.

PFT: Heat 'should be on me,' Ryan says

New York Giants v New York JetsGetty Images

Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez has taken a lot of criticism from fans and the media. But he says he has no doubt that within the locker room, he has unconditional support.

Asked at his press conference today if he is confident that everyone in the locker room supports him, Sanchez answered, ?Absolutely, no question.?

Sanchez offered a similar answer when asked if he thinks he has improved during his three-year NFL career.

?No question, absolutely,? Sanchez said. ?Whether it?s defensive recognition or clock management and stuff like that, understanding the offense and the system, I?m light years ahead, so it?s been a great run so far and we?re not done yet. Hopefully, we?ll get a win and see what happens.?

But watching Sanchez, it?s hard to see how he has really improved in terms of his defensive recognition and clock management. He still makes too many mental mistakes, and he wastes timeouts too often to claim he has improved at clock management.

Ball security is also a huge problem for Sanchez, who fumbled 10 times in his rookie year, nine times last year and has fumbled 10 times this year. Those ball security problems were largely overlooked in his first two seasons because the Jets recovered seven of his 10 fumbles his rookie year and eight of his nine fumbles his second year. But this year the Jets have only recovered two of Sanchez?s 10 fumbles, and the problem of a quarterback who puts the ball on the ground too much has become more apparent.

Ultimately, Sanchez probably got too much credit when the Jets got to back-to-back AFC Championship Games in his first two years, and now he?s probably getting too much blame for the Jets likely missing the playoffs.

?We went to the AFC Championship two years in a row, so there is only one more step to make really, win that game and then go win the Super Bowl,? Sanchez said. ?With those expectations, that?s fine. When things don?t go right, people are going to immediately question me.?

No one said playing quarterback for the New York Jets would be easy.

Rihanna, Chris Brown: Twitter Reveals Shocking Messages

Rick Diamond, WireImage

Twitter is revealing some interesting information regarding the love lives of Rihanna and Chris Brown, R&B's once praised couple.

On Dec. 29, both singers sent out tweets replete with sentiments of romance, yet neither directed the messages to a particular person. Though there wasn't an addressee on either Twitter post, it appears the two were subliminally tweeting one another.

"I'll always love u

The 'F.A.M.E.' creator then went to his Twitter page to express his feelings. "Love U more than u know!," he tweeted Thursday.

While the former lovebirds are really the only two who know the truth behind their words, supporters and critics can't help but wonder if RiRi and C. Breezy were throwing love into the Twitterverse that was aimed at each other.

Since their publicized split in 2009, Rihanna and Chris Bown have steered clear of one another due to a restraining order, which has since been lifted. Both have moved on to new relationships with the 'Talk That Talk' chanteuse being linked to baseball player Matt Kemp, rapper Drake and her 'We Found Love' co-star, Dudley O'Shaughnessy, while Brown has been photographed with girlfriend Karrueche Tran lately.

Arrival of 2012 heralds year of London Olympics

LONDON ? When Big Ben strikes 12 to ring in the New Year, no one will feel the level of anticipation ? and pressure ? more than organizers of the London Olympics.

With the arrival of 2012, the preparations will no longer be for "next year?s games."

The Olympics will be THIS year, less than seven months away ? exactly 209 days from Jan. 1 until the opening ceremony on July 27.

London has been preparing seven years for the games, ever since it defeated Paris in the final round of the International Olympic Committee vote in Singapore on July 6, 2005.

Now, the countdown is truly in the final stretch for the U.K.?s biggest peacetime exercise, or what organizing committee leader Sebastian Coe calls a "Halley?s Comet" moment for Britain.

In a busy year that also will feature Queen Elizabeth II?s Diamond Jubilee and the European Football Championship in Poland and Ukraine, the Olympics stand out as the marquee event of the summer of 2012, a sporting festival that will put London at the epicenter of global attention for 17 days.

The start of 2012 carries symbolic and psychological significance for Coe, a two-time gold medalist in the 1,500 meters who knows the feeling of entering an Olympic year as an athlete.

"For us there will be the realization that there are no more years now. We are down to days," Coe said. "This is the Olympics and it doesn?t get any bigger, and the responsibility doesn?t get any greater than this."

In concrete terms, London is in solid shape as it approaches the moment when it will become the first city to host the Olympics for a third time, after previous games in 1908 and 1948.

The biggest concerns weigh on less predictable factors: security and transportation. Will the games be safe from terrorist attack? Will London?s already-stretched public transport network cope under the added strain?

Most of the venues are built and ready for the 10,000 athletes from more than 200 countries who will converge on the city next summer for 16 days of competition in 26 sports and 300 medal events.

"I feel relaxed but certainly not complacent," Coe said in a recent interview with The Associated Press. "We have big challenges, of course. Delivery of 26 world championships is never going to be a stroll in the park. We know these are the hard yards. There?s nothing easy about the next few months."

A former industrial wasteland in east London has been transformed into the Olympic Park, a 1-square-mile area featuring several flagship arenas and representing the centerpiece of a long-term regeneration project for one of the most deprived areas of England.

Financially, London has managed surprisingly well during some of the worst economic conditions in decades, raising more than $1 billion from sponsors.

"I really can?t think of a games that has been delivered in a more difficult climate since Montreal," Coe said, referring to the debt-ridden 1976 Olympics.

Despite a public outcry over a ticketing system that left hundreds of thousands of applicants empty-handed, organizers raked in hundreds of millions more in revenues from ticket sales. The games are virtually sold out and Coe?s privately-funded organizing committee, LOCOG, is on track to meet its $3.3 billion operating budget.

Fabolous Will 'Evolve' On Loso's Way 2

'Musically, everything I do, I want to keep growing,' rapper tells MTV News.
By Rob Markman

Fabolous

Now that Fabolous has killed off his competition with Christmas mixtape There Is No Competition 3: Death Comes in 3s, the Brooklyn MC is fast at work on his sixth studio album, Loso's Way 2.

"Loso's Way 2 is a work-in-process. I put a lot in my mixtapes, but I definitely put a lot into my albums as well," Fab told MTV News, referencing the DJ Drama-helmed TINC 3 and the upcoming album. "I know a lot of people like mixtape Fab, and albums, to me, you're speaking to a broader audience sometimes. I take that at hand. I guess everybody doesn't see that."

Since his rise in the late 1990s on DJ Clue's street mixtapes, Fab has carved a niche as a witty lyricist, thanks to his clever punch lines and lyrics. It's a style that he expertly employs on each of his mixtapes, but when the "Make Me Better" MC gets into album mode, he has a different focus.

"With the album, I'm looking to evolve as well. Musically, everything I do, I want to keep growing," he said. "I think people have seen my growth album to album. From Ghetto Fabolous to Street Dreams to Real Talk to From Nothin' to Somethin' to Loso's Way, and now they will continue to see that with Loso's Way 2."

It wasn't that Fab lacked substance in any of his previous works. On each of his LPs he included a vast array of topics, packaging party anthems, love songs and story rhymes. But while many of the top MCs like Eminem, Kanye West and at times Jay-Z began to open up about their personal lives, the largely private Loso remained so.

Fab began to change things in 2009 when he released Loso's Way. The #1 LP was anchored by Fabolous-style radio hits like "Throw It in the Bag" and "Everything, Everyday, Everywhere," but the nimble-tongued MC also exhibited welcome artistic growth when he rapped about his love for his son Johan on the Marsha Ambrosius-assisted "Stay."

"It's all a process for me; I'm in a different place," he said. "My last album I was having my first son and now my son is almost 4 years old, so these are processes and you get to talk about those things. I will share them on the next album."

Since releasing "Stay," Fab has seen much more of his personal life spill out into reality shows and the tabloids. His son's mother, Emily Bustamante, is a star on VH1's "Love & Hip Hop" and has been sharing tidbits of her and Fab's relationship on the show. The rapper is not a fan. "It's just not my cup of tea," Fabolous told New York radio host Angie Martinez on her Hot 97 show earlier this month. "It's one side of what's going on. I don't bash it, but I'm not really in support of it, either. I don't think it depicts me the way I am. It just depicts a one-sided version of what's going on."

Fab's feelings about the show won't deter him from opening up on Loso's Way 2. "Children change a lot of stuff in your life," he said to MTV News. "They change the way you look at things and do things. And I think the music will reflect that, too."

Are you looking forward to Loso's Way 2? Tell us in the comments!

Gov't to pay family $17.8M for military jet crash (AP)

SAN DIEGO ? A federal judge on Wednesday ordered the U.S. government to pay $17.8 million to a family that lost four members when a Marine Corps fighter jet crashed into their San Diego home in 2008.

U.S. District Judge Jeffrey Miller's ruling came after a nonjury trial between the Department of Justice and the family, who sought $56 million for emotional and monetary loss.

Don Yoon lost his 36-year-old wife, Youngmi Lee Yoon; his 15-month-old daughter, Grace; his 2-month-old daughter, Rachel; and his 59-year-old mother-in-law, Seokim Kim Lee, who was visiting from Korea to help her eldest daughter take care of their children.

Yoon said in a statement that Miller's ruling was "thoughtful, reasoned and just." Yoon broke down crying throughout his testimony, which came three years to the day when he buried his wife and baby girls in the same casket. He told the judge he only looks forward to the day when he can join them.

"Our family is relieved this part of the process is over, but no sum of money will ever make up for the loss of our loved ones," he said.

The Marine Corps has said the plane suffered a mechanical failure but a series of bad decisions led the pilot ? a student ? to bypass a potentially safe landing at a coastal Navy base after his engine failed on Dec. 8, 2008. The pilot ejected and told investigators he screamed in horror as he watched the jet plow into the neighborhood, incinerating two homes.

The case was unique in that the government admitted liability but disputed how much should be paid to Yoon and his extended family. Government lawyers had put economic losses at about $1 million but left it up to Miller to decide how much should be paid for the loss of love and companionship.

Department of Justice officials declined to comment Wednesday.

During the trial, government attorneys offered their condolences to the family but questioned how much they depended on each other. The law does not allow victims to be compensated for grief, suffering or punitive damages.

The judge said the deaths of the two girls deprived Yoon of "the comfort, companionship, society and love a young child is capable of providing to a new parent and, then, in later life. By all accounts, the Yoon girls would have been raised with traditional cultural and family values emphasizing love and devotion to parents and family."

He ordered Yoon to be awarded about $9.6 million, and his father-in-law, Sanghyun Lee, to be given about $3.7 million. Miller said $1.5 million should go to each of Lee's three adult children for the loss of their mother, Seokim Kim Lee.

In his written ruling, Miller called Seokim Kim Lee an "extraordinary woman whose profound and loving influence greatly molded, directly or indirectly, virtually every plaintiff in this case," after hearing the testimonies of her husband and children, who flew in from Korea to testify.

"And it's that remarkable influence which informs and helps to measure what fair and reasonable compensation should be awarded in this case," Miller wrote.

During the trial, the family's attorney, Brian Panish, showed photographs and videos depicting a close-knit farming family whose lives were shattered on two continents by the crash. Youngmi Lee came to the United States in 2004 to marry Yoon.

Yoon said he harbors no ill will toward the Marine pilot "who did everything he could to prevent this tragedy," but added that his family believes "that misguided attempts by the military to save money and cut costs" contributed to the crash.

"If the cost of paying fair compensation as ordered by this court will be factored into the daily decisions by our military in its operations that affect both military and civilian safety," other families may be saved, the family's statement said.

The military disciplined 13 members of the Marines and the Navy for the errors.

93% Pina

All Critics (45) | Top Critics (10) | Fresh (42) | Rotten (3) | DVD (1)

It should appeal to dance mavens, and to folks who have no idea what a pas de deux is.

The power and intelligence of Bausch's approach, which at times seems more cerebral than sensual, is communicated.

An intimate and ravishingly filmed tribute to German dancer Pina Bausch.

We are among these dancers in their pain and joy and longing. We hear them breathe, feel the heat of their skin, smell their sweat, sense the pounding of their hearts, the ache in their thighs and feet.

A tribute to Pina Bausch, one of modern dance's most groundbreaking choreographers, pic lets the artist's work speak for itself via big, juicy slabs of performance.

Wim Wenders' stylish 3D mirrors the bizarrely captivating world of choreographer Pina Bausch.

A welcome departure from the by-the-numbers fossilization in today's documentary deluge.

Thanks to 3D technology it's dance film quite unlike any other, which was filmmaker Wim Wenders' intention, and it's a transporting experience for the uninitiated and the cognoscenti alike.

...filmmaking as glorious music.

An amazing and appealing 3D documentary by the inimitable Wim Wenders on the innovative dancer and choreographer Pina Bausch.

A movie that does more than demolish the invisible wall between film and dance; it breaks the barrier that intervenes, even at a live performance, between seat and stage.

Less a strict documentary than a heartfelt - and visually gorgeous - celebration of Bausch's work and her mode of working.

Pina belongs in the rare category of adventurous material matched with a thrillingly immersive form -- suck it, Avatar.

Beyond a nostalgic tribute for cognoscenti, this visually stunning film is a terrific introduction. It will be an essential resource and inspiration for future dance fans.

An interest in modern dance isn't necessary to enjoy the film.

No es una pel?cula sobre Pina Bausch sino para Pina Bausch, una suerte de hermoso tributo o regalo que le hacen (y que nos hacen) sus bailarines de la mano de un director que filma como los dioses.

Richly cinematic, using the camera to direct our attention, change our perspective, and significantly alter our sense of the space and the shape of the dancer's bodies.

Unlike so many 3D films, Pina is a prime example of how big a difference the process can make to the film-going experience.

New Delhi, Dec. 27: Arjun Munda waited patiently for the visiting premier at the door of Hotel Taj Palace?s Durbar Hall this evening, insisting on ?friendship first? even as other dignitaries posed for the camera at the launch of the India-Japan Global Partnership Summit scheduled for 2013.

PFT: Chargers delay decision on Turner's fate

Tom BradyAP

Eighteen games remain in the 2011 NFL season: Bears-Packers tonight, Falcons-Saints tomorrow and 16 games on New Year?s Day. Here?s a rundown of how each team still in contention can have its playoff position affected by the results of those 18 games:

Patriots: Clinch home-field advantage throughout the AFC playoffs by beating Buffalo or by having both the Ravens and Steelers lose.

Ravens: Clinch the AFC North and a first-round bye with a win or a Steelers loss. Clinch home-field advantage with a win and a Patriots loss.

Steelers: Clinch the AFC North with a win and a Ravens loss. Clinch home-field advantage with a win, a Ravens loss and a Patriots loss.

Texans: Locked into the AFC No. 3 seed. Week 17 is meaningless to Houston, and the Texans may rest many of their key players.

Broncos: Clinch the AFC West and the No. 4 seed by beating the Chiefs, or a Raiders loss.

Raiders: Clinch the AFC West and the No. 4 seed by beating the Chargers and a Broncos loss. If the Broncos win, the Raiders can still get a wild card if they win and the Bengals lose, plus either the Titans lose or the Jets win.

Bengals: Clinch a playoff spot and the No. 6 seed if they win, or if the Jets lose and either the Raiders or Broncos lose.

Jets: Get the No. 6 seed if they win and the Bengals and Titans and either the Raiders or Broncos lose.

Titans: Get the No. 6 seed if they win and the Bengals lose, plus either the Jets win and the Broncos or Raiders lose, or the Jets lose and the Broncos and Raiders both win.

Packers: Clinch home-field advantage throughout the NFC playoffs if they beat either the Bears tonight or the Lions next week, or if the 49ers lose next week.

49ers: Clinch a first-round bye with a win next week or the Saints losing either on Monday night or next week. The 49ers can still get home-field advantage throughout the playoffs if they win and the Packers lose to both the Bears and the Lions.

Saints: Clinch the NFC South if they win either of their two remaining games, and they could even clinch the NFC South if they lose both of their remaining games, if the Falcons lose in Week 17. The Saints can?t get home-field advantage throughout the NFC playoffs, but they can get a first-round bye if they win both their remaining games and the 49ers lose next week.

Cowboys/Giants: Next Sunday night?s game is essentially a playoff game: The Cowboys-Giants winner wins the NFC East and is the No. 4 seed, while the loser?s season is over. If the game ends in a tie, the Giants win the division.

Falcons: The Falcons can clinch a playoff spot tonight by the Packers beating the Bears. They need just one more win or one more Chicago loss to get to the playoffs. They could still win the NFC South, but only if they beat the Saints Monday night and win next week, plus the Saints lose next week.

Lions: Detroit is an NFC wild card. Whether they?re the No. 5 or No. 6 seed depends on the results of their own game with the Packers and the Falcons? remaining games.

Bears: Chicago can still make the playoffs, but only if they win both their remaining games and the Falcons lose both their remaining games.

Girl, 9, was feared missing after flight change (AP)

HARTFORD, Conn. ? A 9-year-old girl flying by herself to visit her grandmother had to change planes unexpectedly, sending her relatives into a panic when her original Southwest Airlines flight landed without her.

Chloe Boyce took off from Tennessee on Tuesday, bound for LaGuardia Airport in New York. Bad weather forced her plane to detour, and the passengers had to change planes. When the plane she was initially on arrived at LaGuardia, family members said it took close to an hour to locate her.

"When I got the text (from her mother) that she wasn't on the plane, and Southwest doesn't know where she is, I started freaking out," said Joseph Kerr, the girl's stepfather.

Southwest spokesman Brad Hawkins said the airline apologized to the family for not letting them know she had changed planes.

Chloe, of Clarksville, Tenn., was accompanied by Southwest employees during her trip, but she said she was a little nervous because nobody told her why she had to get off the plane in Baltimore.

"I was like `I'm supposed to be getting off at LaGuardia. I'm not supposed to get off this plane,'" she said.

Chloe's journey started in Nashville. She was rerouted to Cleveland, then went to Columbus, Ohio, before landing in Baltimore. From there, she made it to New York, 3 1/2 hours later than scheduled. After meeting with her relatives, they drove to her grandmother's house in Danbury, Conn.

Her stepfather is an Army sergeant based at Fort Campbell, Ky., so she is used to traveling, her family said.

"She was definitely more calm than we were," said Elena Kerr, her mother, who reached Chloe by cell phone at the Baltimore airport when she did not show up on time in New York.

Southwest gave the family a $250 flight voucher and refunded the girl's ticket, but Chloe's family has not received an explanation for why the airline did not tell them about the changes. He said they plan to ask the Federal Aviation Administration to require airlines to notify guardians of any changes to flights carrying unaccompanied minors.

Hawkins, the Southwest spokesman, said the airline tries to notify parents of "irregular operations," even though it is not mandatory. He also said the airline tries to avoid such situations by booking unaccompanied minors on itineraries that don't require changing planes.

For the return trip, Joseph Kerr said they will be driving back.

"That way we know where she is, who she is with, and she is safe," he said.

College Sports: Pac-12 football: Matt Barkley to return for senior season (let’s just hand USC the South title now)

The big news out of Trojanland on Thursday is big news for the Pac-12 next fall:

USC quarterback Matt Barkley just announced he?s pulling a Luck.

Barkley will pass on the top tier of the 2012 NFL Draft and return to USC for one more season ? his final season ? as the presumptive Heisman favorite (assuming RG3 turns pro) ? and the potential first pick in the 2012 draft.

Sound familiar?

(More details here.)

I?ll have more on Barkley?s decision ? and how it impacts the Pac-12 and national landscape ? in the next 24 hours.

Remember, the Trojans are eligible for the conference title and a bowl berth in 2012.

And remember, the bulk of USC?s starting lineup is expected to return.

The Trojans will no doubt be a top-10 team in the preseason polls and the heavy, heavy, HEAVY favorite to win the South, which was a mess this season and doesn?t, at first glance, appear to have much more clarity in ?12.

The 10 Most Innovative Video Games of 2011

Platform: Nintendo 3DS

It's a little hard to admit how much I like Pushmo, the groundbreaking game for the Nintendo 3DS developed by Intelligent Systems and released just a week ago. First off, the cutesy cartoon graphics seem like they were designed for people half my height and a quarter my age, and the syrupy techno soundtrack featured on many Nintendo DS games is here, too.

Yet gameplay is incredibly addictive. You play as Mallo, a tiny tomato-shaped character who pulls, pushes, and jumps across squares on a small game board. It's something like QuBIT for pocket gamers. Few games fulfill on the 3D promise, but Pushmo does in spades. Mallo moves from side to side but, in an almost surreal way, can also move diagonally and front to back. This ties into the strategy; in later levels you have to plan your movements strategically and not box yourself into a 3D corner. That would not be possible unless you could see in the game in a 3D plane.

Iowa GOP worried by hacker threat to caucus vote (AP)

IOWA CITY, Iowa ? Republican Party officials in Iowa are taking new steps to secure their vote counting systems after an anonymous threat suggested computer hackers could attempt to disrupt next month's presidential nominating caucuses.

A video uploaded to YouTube features a computer-generated voice denouncing a corrupt political system and calls on supporters to "peacefully shut down" the Jan. 3 caucuses.

The video claims to be from Anonymous, a loosely organized group of hackers who have successfully conducted past computer attacks.

Investigators aren't sure whether the video is authentic, but party officials have instructed precinct caucuses to use paper ballots as a backup system and taken other steps to protect the database and website that displays caucus results.

Congress puts spy world on money diet (AP)

WASHINGTON ? Congress is putting the spy world on a diet ? trimming back planned growth in staff and high-tech surveillance programs.

Next year's budget doesn't cancel any programs, but it shaves money off big-ticket items like the multi-billion-dollar spy satellites.

A budget bill passed Friday is classified, but it's expected to stay in the same range as last year's -- just under $79 billion. Spy agencies had asked for an increase.

Congress left alone plans for new hires in cybersecurity and counter-terror threat finance.

One change in the new measure: Families of intelligence officers will get the same financial help for burial expenses as those of uniformed military, if agents are killed by terrorists.

Reporter's notebook: Return to Cuba

After decades of rule under Castro, citizens of the communist island nation are enjoying new freedoms such as buying property, owning businesses and openly participating in religious gatherings. TODAY's Natalie Morales reports from Havana.

?

By Matthew Rivera, Senior video producer, msnbc.com

For decades, Cuba has been mostly closed to U.S. visitors. That is slowly beginning to change as tourists take advantage of newly relaxed travel restrictions.

These new rules allow people to travel directly to Cuba on cultural exchanges. They also permit residents of the United States with relatives remaining in Cuba to visit the country using an expanded family visa.

In mid-October, I applied for one of the new family visas and traveled to Cuba with my stepmother, Isabel, to visit our extended family and to explore some of the neighborhoods where she grew up.

Isabel, whose name I have changed out of concern that she won't be allowed back into Cuba?and for her family still there, fled the country in 1962 to live with her mother in New York and hadn?t been back?to Cuba since. A year after she took asylum, Isabel?s father fled Cuba and eventually joined her. He had been outspoken against Fulgencio Battista, the former Cuban president who was overthrown by Fidel Castro in 1959.? But by 1961 he was a critic of Castro ? and a target for the dictator?s new government. Friends of Isabel?s father advised him to leave the country for his own safety.

Matthew Rivera / msnbc.com

A man sings at El Floridita, a bar in Havana, Cuba, known as the birthplace of the daiquiri.

The conditions of his escape and the many years he spent as a voice of the Cuban exile community made Isabel very nervous about returning. She feared, though, that this might be her only chance to visit, as Cuba often changes its travel restrictions. We booked our tickets, but the final details weren?t settled until two days before departure due to the complexity of her visa.

Even given these considerations, traveling to Cuba requires? more work than you might expect. First, the Cuban government requires visitors to buy temporary health insurance even if you currently have a policy. We were also warned to tell people that we were not tourists and were not on vacation, since we were traveling on a family visa. The visa was arranged by a licensed office in the U.S., which serves as a kind of travel agency responsible for arranging the paperwork and purchasing the airfare, hotel accommodations and insurance.

Straddling the border
The first way that Havana surprised me was in its proximity. The flight from Miami took 45 minutes from takeoff to landing, barely enough time for the seatbelt light to turn off. Like other border-straddling cities, the closeness between them belies some of the striking differences.? Miami remains the epicenter of Cuban refugees, and their influence can be felt in everything from local culture to national politics. Havana, on the other hand, is a city whose influence has been nearly extinguished.? By some measures it should be the Capital of the Caribbean, but that title was lost long ago.??

These were the things I was thinking when we began our sudden descent into Jose Mart? Airport. When we deplaned, a plainclothes officer immediately approached Isabel at the airport. He took her aside and asked who she was and why she had come.

?I was so nervous,? Isabel later said. She was visiting family and she hadn?t been to Cuba since 1962, Isabel told the officer. ?Do you think that, since 1962, you still have any family in Cuba?? he replied sarcastically. ?You?re not really Cuban, are you???

She was shaken, but she replied that yes, she was, and she had all of the legal documents to prove it. Eventually he let her pass to the traditional customs office.

We were met by Isabel?s cousin, Marta, and her son, Antonin (their names have also been changed). Isabel and Marta hadn?t seen each other since they were children. They were not the kind of cousins to call each other or write often, but the reunion was surprisingly warm, and the presence of family helped Isabel forget the scene at the airport. ?It was like we were sisters,? Isabel said.

In Pictures: Return to Cuba

Ground rules
Their time together freed me to travel with Antonin, who was happy to play tour guide. I had dreams of riding around in a 1950s Chevy of some kind, but Antonin?s car was an unglamorous gray Datsun, a leftover from one of the previous waves of freedom that Cubans have periodically experienced.

Matthew Rivera / msnbc.com

A vintage car drives by in the suburbs of Havana, Cuba.

Antonin told me how to behave in Cuba. He pointed out Castro?s secluded compound and warned me not to take photos. We drove east of the city and talked about the way people cut the grass by hand, swinging machetes in long, laborious strokes.

He showed me the Plaza de la Revoluci?n, with its super-hero statue of Jose Marti, the nineteenth century Cuban nationalist.? Behind the statue we could see what he imagined was the only lawnmower on the island, an ancient red Toro, circling the government headquarters, and pushed by a man in a white coat, as if he were a lawnmower technician.

In his free time, Antonin was building an apartment in his mother?s house, which could be rented for extra income. Until recently, Cubans couldn?t rent out rooms, but as with a new law allowing real estate transactions, the government had recently permitted this freedom.

Exploring Cuba
I stayed at the Hotel Nacional, an 81-year-old building that is a snapshot of Prohibition-era luxury. The eastern patio to the hotel looks out to the old city, a view that is complimented by a wandering four-piece band playing Cuban standards and two small bars that serve fresh mojitos.? Back inside, the lobby winds away to half a dozen secluded lounges and concert halls. Frank Sinatra once performed at the hotel during a famous mobster meeting (an event that was dramatized in a scene from 'The Godfather Part II').

Matthew Rivera / msnbc.com

Hotel Nacional, an 81-year-old building known for its famous guests.

Today, it?s one of the better hotels in the city because it?s often used by the government to host dignitaries. Travelers who stayed in the other ?five star? hotels in Havana showed me pictures of flooded hallways, broken toilets and walls with giant holes in them.

One afternoon, I walked through Havana with Isabel, starting at the Capitolo, which is similar to the Capitol building in Washington, D.C. Havana is a dilapidated city laid out on ambitious, Parisian lines.? Collapsed apartments parallel the once-grand boulevards, the iconic 1950s cars burn black smoke into the city air, and neglected city blocks bracket the views along the famous seawall known as Malec?n.

We walked through a crowd of people begging for money, selling souvenirs, or asking if we wanted Cohiba cigars. We moved along a wide pedestrian park called the Paseo del Prado, flanked by large lion sculptures where Isabel remembered that that her father had taught her to ride her bike.

Returning home
After lunch, we went to visit Isabel?s old house in the rundown neighborhood of Centro Habana. Since she left, new families have moved in, but they were happy to let Isabel look around inside.

Matthew Rivera / msnbc.com

A composite of the kitchen, and the spiral stairs in the back, in Isabel's childhood home, in Havana, Cuba. Her father installed the stairs to reach the rabbit coops he kept on the roof. The kitchen was rebuilt after Isabel's family moved out but has fallen into disrepair after years of limited funds available from the government.

?We used to love that house very much,? Isabel said. ?My father built a spiral staircase that went to the roof where he used to raise rabbits and turtles. It was like a little farm.?

Most buildings in Havana are neglected until they collapse, and Isabel?s old home is no exception. The staircase is half-destroyed, the windows are covered with plastic instead of glass, and the ceiling has caved in. The family living there said that the apartment is too large to care for. Before Cubans could rent out apartments, the only way to move was to trade with someone, and to pay the difference if one property was worth more than the other.?

We soon left the apartment and decided to walk around Havana. We explored Barrio Chino (Chinatown), a neighborhood that was once home to a close-knit Chinese community but is now a place for brightly painted lunch stands and shuttered offices.? We passed something that looked like a graveyard for late?19th century locomotive engines, parked inexplicably in the middle of the city.?

Changing times
Cubans might view new freedoms granted by the government cautiously, but signs of the changes appear in the open. As we walked, we passed people unfolding tables and tarps, preparing to sell clothes at one of the newly legal markets. Some merchants haven?t yet learned how to make the market themselves, and it takes some questioning to learn what they?re selling, and for how much.

We left on a Sunday, and at the airport we witnessed one of the most surprising views. The departure screen included flights bound for Tampa, Orlando, New York and Miami. As we waited for our American Airlines chartered flight to take off, a JetBlue charter flight landed on the runway, full of visitors who would likely discover Cuba for the first time.

After Isabel?s first experience at the airport, she was relieved that nobody bothered her as we were leaving. While we waited for the flight, she reflected on her reunion with Marta.

?I had a sense of relief that somebody was talking the same language as me, from the same family, with the same blood,? Isabel said. ?It was my family, but I was away from them for so many years, from a place that?s supposed to be my country.?
