News: Wellington College Pupils Triumph in Adult Chess League Top Division

A team of seven schoolboys from Wellington College have just scored an historic first in chess in the county.

The boys won the Berkshire Chess League Division 1, an adult league, with one game in hand. They played eight games and won eight. This is the first time any school has entered a team in this division, and the closest school is Eton in the lower half of division 2.

Unlike other clubs in the league who have titled players in their teams, Wellington?s pupils are not yet at that level although two of the players, James Holland and Brandon Clarke, are close to achieving this status of Master level.

The team are also into the last eight of the national schools competition, having secured wins over RGS Guildford and Reading Boys, who were last year?s finalists).

Wellington?s first team has been unbeaten by schools for 4 years. (Knocked out of national schools twice on age handicap).

The winning side were James Holland, Brandon Clarke, Akash Jain, Alex Galliano, Adrian Archer Lock, Alex Freeland and Ewan Wilson.
