Analysis: For euro zone, the heat is on again (Reuters)

BERLIN (Reuters) ? The euro zone crisis seemed to vanish from the headlines for a brief moment as 2011 ticked over into 2012, but it is about to return with a vengeance.

The coming months will be decisive in determining whether European leaders can hold their increasingly fragile currency bloc together or will stumble in the face of a daunting set of political, economic and financial obstacles lined up in their path at the start of the new year.

In Greece, where the crisis started over two years ago, the government is in a race against time to agree a bond-swap deal with banks that is crucial to a new 130 billion euro bailout package from European partners and the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

Without that package, Athens faces the threat of a debt default in March.

But talks with the banks and investment funds that are being asked to accept 50 percent losses on their Greek bonds to help pay for the bailout have dragged on for weeks, sowing doubts about whether Athens can really deliver.

"The risk of a disorderly Greek default is once again on the rise, with the threat of contagion to Italy and others," economists at Barclays Capital said last week.

Compounding the challenge, both Greece and France face elections within months that could complicate decision-making at the national level in two key states and thwart the broader bloc's ability to act swiftly at a time when pressure is high to bed down agreements sealed at an EU summit last month.

A key element of the summit package was a deal to funnel 200 billion euros to the IMF, money that could be used to offer precautionary credit programs to Italy and possibly Spain.

But the euro zone is struggling to get the 50 billion euros it needs from nations outside the currency bloc to meet its goal. A senior German official told Reuters on condition of anonymity that securing the participation of Britain, which has shown no inclination to contribute, was absolutely crucial.

Even if those funds are secured, neither Italy nor Spain have shown any willingness to accept aid -- and the stigma and greater fiscal oversight that would come with it.

Italian 10-year bond yields have pushed back above the 7 percent mark over the past week, approaching record euro-era highs, and both Rome and Madrid must sell bonds this week in the first major market tests of 2012 for the euro zone's third and fourth biggest economies.

The Greek election, expected by the end of March, seems unlikely to produce an outright winner, meaning coalition talks could drag out and prolong uncertainty.

In France, polls suggest there is a good chance President Nicolas Sarkozy, who has steered Europe's crisis response along with German Chancellor Angela Merkel, could be pushed out of office by his Socialist challenger Francois Hollande.

While Merkel and Sarkozy have polar-opposite temperaments and clashed frequently when the Frenchman first took power in 2007, they are both conservatives, born just half a year apart, and have developed an effective, even close, partnership after years of high-pressure crisis summits.

And after years of frustration with the French president's shoot-from-the-hip style, government officials in Berlin say they are now worried about the end of "Merkozy," the most important relationship in Europe, in the middle of the crisis.

A cut in France's triple-A credit rating in the weeks ahead could also upset the delicate Franco-German balance, although some economists believe it could force the French to accept more far-reaching fiscal reforms, regardless of who wins the two-round election in April and May.

"It won't be Merkozy anymore. It will be Angela Merkel and (IMF chief) Christine Lagarde dictating policy in Europe," said French economist Jacques Delpla.

"The next French president, whether its Hollande or Sarkozy, won't have many options. The deficit will need to be cut, taxes increased and spending cut."

RECESSION RISK

Fittingly, Merkel and Sarkozy kick off 2012 with a Monday meeting in Berlin to prepare an EU summit scheduled for January 30 that is expected to focus on efforts to boost growth.

That is perhaps the biggest challenge of all for the bloc. After several years of fiscal consolidation to push down debts and deficits swollen by the global financial crisis of 2008/09, the euro zone is headed for recession -- a factor that has pushed the euro down to 16-month lows against the dollar.

Even the bloc's economic powerhouse Germany is at risk of recession. Greece is entering its fifth straight year of contraction, with no hope of paying down its massive debt.

But restoring market confidence in the finances of struggling euro area countries and getting their economies working again seem like contradictory goals at this point.

"In the current market environment there is no room for using a Keynesian-type expansionary fiscal policy to boost demand in countries with low growth - the markets will simply not accept such a strategy," Deutsche Bank said in a confidential note on the crisis prepared for the German government late last year.

One bright spot is the European Central Bank (ECB), which is showing greater flexibility under its new President Mario Draghi, euro zone officials say.

The ECB's decision last month to provide cheap long-term loans to banks has helped assuage fears about the financial sector and could support sovereign debt sales going forward.

"We're already seeing that Draghi is more flexible than Trichet," the senior German official said, referring to the Italian's French predecessor Jean-Claude Trichet. "He won't put a bazooka in the window for everyone to see but he'll do what it takes."

The big question is whether this buys Europe's leaders the time they need to overcome the formidable challenges they face in the new year.

Microsoft Will Buy Twitter, Adobe to Buy Picnik, and Other Bold Predictions for 2010

It wasn?t so much the predictions as the discussion that was most interesting at last night?s annual predictions dinner, organized by the Washington Technology Industry Association. Will Twitter be acquired in 2010, and why? Who will have the dominant cloud computing platform in the next couple of years? What kind of startup are you looking to build or finance, and which areas are you staying away?from?

A panel of Seattle-area tech entrepreneurs and investors gamely took the bait and had some lively exchanges over the course of an hour. OK, these guys all know each other, and we?ll take what they say with a?grain of salt since it?s a?public forum?but here were some of the most interesting points they made. The panel was split 3?to 2, with the narrow majority guessing Twitter will get bought next year. Andy Sack of seed-stage fund Founder?s Co-op predicted Twitter will make more money than Facebook in 2010 (surprising, given the current disparity in the other direction). Glenn Kelman, the CEO of Redfin, an online real estate firm, said Twitter should charge for search (as it has begun to do in partnerships with Google and Bing). Kelly Smith from Curious Office and the startup Pressplane argued that Twitter could be ?absorbed by a?big company,? but ?it?s going to go nowhere.? By the end of the evening, Sack was predicting that Microsoft would buy Twitter next?year.

There was a?consensus that 2010 could be a?big year for acquisitions. Bill Bryant of Draper Fisher Jurvetson boldly predicted that Amazon will buy Netflix, Blockbuster, and Hulu, while opening brick and mortar ?Amazon media stores.? Greg Gottesman from Madrona Venture Group said Cisco might buy EMC (for VMware) and Seattle-based F5 Networks, while Microsoft might buy Research In Motion, the maker of the BlackBerry smartphone. Sack predicted Adobe would pick up Seattle photo-editing startup Picnik. Rupert Murdoch (News Corp.) would buy Seattle?s Cheezburger Network, and someone would buy?Redfin.

Looking back on 2009 for a?minute, the big deals that were questioned by the panel included Adobe?s acquisition of Omniture (Gottesman said it just didn?t make sense strategically) and ? Next?Page ?

Estoy convencido de que sois muchos los que aguard?is con impaciencia el estreno este viernes de ?Millennium: Los hombres que no amaban a las mujeres?, nueva versi?n de la novela de Stieg Larsson que David Fincher se ha encargado de dirigir. Uno tender?a a dar por sentado que las adaptaciones de las otras dos novelas estaban ya confirmadas, pero eso es algo que nunca podemos dar por seguro. ?El motivo? ?Millennium: Los hombres que no amaban a las mujeres? ha optado por obtener una calificaci?n R en USA, lo cual elimina de antemano a un segmento del p?blico (los menores de edad) en favor de ofrecer un thriller adulto que no se ande con medias tintas. Sin embargo, se esperaba que la pel?cula fuese un ?xito descomunal que salvase ese problema y tambi?n el hecho de estrenarse en plena campa?a navide?a, la cual no parece la m?s adecuada para un t?tulo de estas caracter?sticas, pero no ha sido el caso. Ojo, no quiero decir que la pel?cula haya sido un fracaso, ya que ya ha superado los 100 millones de taquilla mundial habiendo costado 90. La pega es que se estren? casi en paralelo a ?Sherlock Holmes: Juego de Sombras? y ?Misi?n Imposible ? Protocolo Fantasma? y ?stas han recaudado bastante m?s.

Los rumores indicaban que Sony se estaba replanteando el rodar las adaptaciones de ?La chica que so?aba con una cerilla y un bid?n de gasolina? y ?La reina en el palacio de las corrientes de aire?, los dos libros que completan la trilog?a. S? que es cierto que Steven Zaillian ya estaba trabajando en el gui?n de ambas pel?culas, sobre todo con la finalidad de potenciar m?s la presencia de Lisbeth en la adaptaci?n de ?La chica que so?aba con una cerilla y un bid?n de gasolina? y, obviamente, para ir allanando el terreno y que el rodaje pudiera iniciarse lo m?s r?pido posible si la primera entrega era el gran ?xito que estaban esperando. Lo m?s curioso de todo es que Sony ha decidido dar luz verde al rodaje de las secuelas sin saber si la pel?cula va a tener un ?xito fuera de USA que lo justifique, ya que apenas se ha estrenado en un pu?ado de pa?ses con un ?xito un tanto discreto.

Es de esperar que Rooney Mara volver? a interpretar a Lisbeth y tambi?n que hicieran firmar un contrato a Daniel Craig para reaparecer en las siguientes entregas. ?Por qu? hago esta menci?n espec?fica en el caso de Craig? Pues porque ?l mismo dej? bien claro que su principal motivaci?n para aparecer en ?Millennium: los hombres que no amaban a las mujeres? era el hecho de que David Fincher iba a dirigirla, y eso es algo que no est? nada claro que vaya a suceder con la segunda y tercera entrega. No es que el director de ?Seven? haya descartado esa posibilidad, pero todo indica que tiene m?s inter?s en que su pr?ximo trabajo sea una adaptaci?n muy libre de la novela ?20.000 leguas de viaje submarino?, mientras que los planes de Sony son no demorar en exceso el rodaje de la primera secuela, la cual quieren que empiece a grabarse a finales de este mismo a?o.

Es de esperar que la taquilla internacional remonte (el estudio baraja ingresar unos 200 millones de d?lares en los cines no norteamericanos) y Sony no acabe ech?ndose atr?s, porque no ser?a la primera vez que un estudio asegura que van a hacerse una o varias secuelas de un estreno potente que luego acaban qued?ndose en nada. Me viene a la mente, aprovechando que tambi?n sal?a Daniel Craig, el caso de la absurda ?La br?jula dorada?, que fracas? en USA pero luego tuvo un taquillaje muy respetable en el resto del planeta. Adem?s, imagino que si consigue varias nominaciones de importancia en los pr?ximos Oscar (por cierto, pod?is ver aqu? el original tr?iler de los Oscar que se lanz? hace un par de d?as) eso tambi?n ayudar? a que ingrese unos cuantos millones m?s. Y es que ser?a una pena que dentro de unos meses tuviera que publicar diciendo que lo que os estoy contando ahora result? ser una mentira. Por cierto, ?cu?ntas ganas ten?is de ver ?Millennium: Los hombres que no amaban a las mujeres??

California's Central Valley is 1,300 miles from the Colorado farm linked to a deadly listeria outbreak. But that hasn't registered with the public. Cantaloupe growers hope to change that. A tragedy 1,300 miles away changed a way of life in this Central California farm town that proudly calls itself the Cantaloupe Center of the World. This would normally be the season when farmers plan the summer crop that in good years is valued at nearly $200 million, according to the California Cantaloupe Advisory Board. Instead, they are cutting acreage devoted to the fruit and scrambling for ways to reassure a nervous public that cantaloupes are safe to eat. In the fall, the deadliest food-borne illness outbreak in the United States since 1924 was traced to listeria-tainted cantaloupe in Colorado. Thirty people died and at least 146 became ill, with cases spread over 28 states.

No matter that the tainted cantaloupes were all traced to one farm operation in that state. Consumer demand plummeted and in California's Central Valley, which produces 90% of summer-harvested cantaloupes in the U.S., the 2011 harvest abruptly halted. Hundreds of workers were let go. Farmers left fruit in the fields. "The tragedy still keeps me awake at night," said Stephen Patricio, chairman of the advisory board. "People shouldn't have to fear their food. But the irony is that California shipped more cantaloupe in a day than Colorado in their whole season. Millions and millions of cantaloupe, healthy and fine." The stigma has only partially lifted since the fall. Cantaloupe consumption is down nationwide 53% from before the outbreak, according to consulting firm Perishables Group. "During the crisis I was watching the local news, and right here in the valley they were telling people that if they felt uneasy about their cantaloupe to throw them out," said Jim Malanca, senior vice president of sales and marketing for Westside Produce, a farming and packing operation that has been producing cantaloupes since the 1940s.

"You're not going to find one Colorado cantaloupe in California or Arizona, but that's the perception we're fighting. It's overwhelming." If perceptions don't turn around quickly, Patricio estimated, cantaloupe acreage in the Central Valley this coming season could be down as much as 30%. A nationwide marketing campaign aimed at calming fears and promoting the product is probably out of the reach of the cantaloupe industry, which is far from being one of the giants of agriculture. In 2010, for example, the top vegetable or fruit commodity in California was grapes, with a crop worth about $3.2 billion, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. That year, the state's cantaloupe crop was worth about $134 million. It had been on a downward trajectory even before the outbreak in the fall. In 2010, cantaloupe was planted in 40,500 acres in the state, according to the USDA. In 2001, the crop took up 55,500 acres and was valued at $252 million. The shrinking acreage was due, at least in part, to the increased planting of crops that didn't need as much water.

"Look, this isn't an industry with a lot of money to do a national print and radio campaign," Malanca said. "There are no corporate growers of cantaloupe. It's going to come down to individual owners figuring out how to tell their customers their cantaloupes are safe." This month the Center for Produce Safety will host a closed-door symposium in San Diego for cantaloupe growers, shippers, agricultural researchers, government regulators and others to create guidelines for best growing practices. "The main question will be, 'What are the gaps in our knowledge?'" said Bonnie Fernandez-Fenaroli, executive director of the UC Davis-based center. "Do we need to do research or is it a matter of the cantaloupe industry implementing and enforcing best practices?" Patricio said that pressure will be on buyers to not do business with any growers who do not abide by the guidelines that come out of the meeting. Linda Welter Cohen is chief executive of Caliber Group, a marketing and public relations firm that represented a large tomato company after a 2008 salmonella outbreak in that crop. She said the guidelines-setting meeting is a step in the right direction.

"With produce, the best PR is the product itself," she said. "It all starts with 'Is it fresh and flavorful and can the consumer depend on it being safe?'" Greg Johnson, editor of the Packer, the leading industry newspaper for fruits and vegetables, agreed that the meeting is important. "But even if they do come up with a good safety metric, will the public pay attention?" he asked. "California cantaloupe are safe ? were safe all along. But can you expect someone in Kansas City, where I live, to pay attention to whether the cantaloupe is from California? "They're just trying to buy some food and feed their family." In the absence of far-reaching advertising campaigns, Cohen said the individual farmers can take matters into their own hands. To help ease out of the tomato crisis, she advised her client to answer every question from the public on the risks and safety measures associated with produce. "For small growers that may mean answering phone calls, posting messages on their company websites," she said.

Don Smith, 82, was way ahead of her. He runs Turlock Fruit Co. ? a farm founded by his father in 1918 ? with his son and grandson in the Central Valley. At the start of the cantaloupe problem in the fall, he had his grandson ? the one who went to Yale, he noted ? post on the company website that anyone with concerns about their cantaloupes should call them. The site got about 14,000 hits a day, and scores of consumers took up the offer to telephone the farm. "One day I know I talked to 50 people," Smith said. "Some of the calls were touching. A woman in Chicago whose little girl was sick, someone from Alaska. I heard the fear. "I told each and every one of them our cantaloupe were safe and anything else they wanted to know about how we grew them." In debating the future direction of the company, Smith takes a more optimistic stand than that of his son and grandson, who think the industry will be injured for a long time. "Maybe it's that I'm older and I've seen cantaloupe beset by all kinds of drama: weather, water, labor unrest, truck and train rates," he said. "But mostly I think the backlash will blow over because this area has warm, dry days and cold nights, and we really do grow the best cantaloupe." Still, he says he will put in fewer acres than last season. But just how many acres? That's Smith's secret. "You can't ask a Texas cowboy how many cows," he said, "or a melon grower how many acres."
